An Amazing Exploration of God’s Design!

Scientists are exploring, analyzing, and applying aspects of God’s incredible design in nature to create cutting-edge breakthroughs! Applied Engineering: Studies of God’s Design in Nature, Master Books homeschool science curriculum, takes your junior high student on an exploration of the fascinating field of biomimicry. Students will:

  • Discover how innovations like solar panels in space unfurled using technology gleaned from beech tree leaves
  • Learn how the glow of a cat’s eyes innovates road reflectors
  • Explore the naturally sticky inspirations for Velcro
  • and so much more!

Engaging, Applied Learning

In Applied Engineering, students will explore the field of biomimicry through the pages of Discovery of Design, Made in Heaven, and Men of Science, Men of God. They will discover the intricacies of God’s design in nature, learn how that design has inspired scientific innovations, and encounter amazing scientists!

Applied Engineering Curriculum Pack Includes:

Applied Engineering Teacher Guide

  • Suggested daily schedule—saving you time!
  • Worksheets
  • Quizzes
  • Answer Key

Discovery of Design

An exciting look at cutting-edge scientific advances, Discovery of Design highlights incredible examples that include:

  • How things like batteries, human organ repair, microlenses, automotive engineering, paint, and even credit card security all have links to natural designs
  • How optic research is rooted in the photonic properties of opal gemstones
  • Current and future research from the fields of stealth technology, communications, cosmetics, nanotechnology, surveillance, and more!

Made in Heaven

Through beautiful illustrations and engaging text, students will discover how science frequently mimics God’s design—all while refusing to give Him glory! Students will discover how a fly’s ear, the lizard’s foot, the moth’s eye, and so many other natural examples are inspiring improvements and new technologies in our lives!

Men of Science, Men of God

In Men of Science, Men of God, Dr. Henry Morris presents 101 biographies which include Christian testimonies of scientists who believed in the Bible and in a personal Creator God. These scientists were pioneers and “founding fathers” of modern scientific disciplines.

Very Disappointed
Review by Matt
In my opinion, this course takes very complicated concepts and tries to sum them up in 2 pages. I do not believe this curriculum is appropriate for 7th grade as there is no knowledge base to draw upon to make these complex concepts make sense. As a result, the homework becomes a "hunt and copy" exercise to fill in the answers; however, actual learning is minimal while the time demand is high. It is possible for high schoolers who have recently taken biology or chemistry to get more out of this course; however, advertising this course to 7-9 grade is really deceiving. I shared these thoughts with Master Books and was told I can return the books at my expense PLUS a 15% restocking fee. It would cost me $45 to get $65 returned.
Perfect for 7-8th grade Science
Review by Lisabee
I used this course for 9th grade with my oldest and felt it was much to juvenile, so I chose to use it earlier with my second son making it his 8th grade science. It was a perfect fit, even if the labs really are pretty basic. But we went ahead and paid for the added video lessons and he loved them.

The four day week schedule was perfect for us and since my youngest doesn't mind quizzes, we chose to use them OPEN BOOK with him.

Again--I'd say this is more designed for MIDDLE SCHOOL and I wouldn't use it for 9th. It's ideal for 6-7th.
So interesting!

My son is using this science this year. He has learned so much about how God's design has inspired the designs of modern technology.
Very Interesting
Review by Kimmy
My oldest son is very literal and reading through the applied engineering books allowed him to make real life applications between engineering and God's creation. I love how it all relays back to God and His creation. It has been fun to watch my older son teach his younger brothers what he has learned through things he's made around the house. It worked for our family, and I would definitely recommend it to any young ones who love engineering and building.
Intriguing info
Review by Leticia
My son truly enjoyed the curriculum. It was very intriguing for him and I was very glad at the way God is involved thru this study. Thank you for involving Christ thru study.
The one thing we didn’t enjoy was the very spaced out testing it was a lot to take in over several chapters.
I'm somewhere in between
Review by Barbara
I see from the above reviews that this curriculum is either "loved" or "hated". I'm somewhere in between. I'm using the idea of this curriculum at a co-op. We're just about 1/2 way through and, to be honest, I can't stand it the way it is presented. The first book -- Discovery of Deign and lesson plans -- is very boring. Read, answer questions, etc. The second book -- Made in Heaven -- is more interesting but the lesson plans seem way above my comprehension to explain to the students. And I don't understand why the two books aren't meshed together. In the first book, they talk about the Namib beetle. That is also mentioned in the second book. Why not talk about these two chapters near or at the same time? There are many other examples like that. I found many videos online to show my students that better explain a concept in the DoD book. (Ex. Namib beetle takes water from the air: (Ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THJVuinPbc0) For the second half of the year, I'm going to try to come up with fun, hands-on, quick things to do. Like for the Velcro chapter, I have burdocks from the yard for the students to examine with magnifying glasses. Then they can examine the Velcro and see how the inventor of Velcro got the idea. For the Beech Leaf chapter we're going to do origami and try to fold large maps back to their original position. I'm glad this was an inexpensive curriculum or I think I'd have been more frustrated. If you think outside the box and add your own twist on things, I think you'll like it better. I know it's more work, but it takes a year or two to get into a groove with a new curriculum.
Perfect for 8th Grade
Review by Lisa
I FIRST used this curriculum with my oldest son about 4 years ago as a 9th grade science. I found that while he enjoyed it, it was super "fluffy" for him as an advanced science kind of guy. So I decided to use it for my youngest when he hit 8TH grade as a good transition into independent work for high school.

I also decided to purchase the video lessons for him. I'm glad I did! He finds the video lessons beneficial and enjoys the mix of video plus the book work. It isn't identical information as a couple reviews have suggested--I watched 5 of them and then read the book. They are a great supplement to the work and sometimes hearing it said helps cement it in with the book reading. So if you can afford to add on the video lessons, I recommend it.
Interesting and engaging
Review by Kathryn
My son really enjoyed this course. He was able to work independently along with the Masterbooks Academy video lessons. I really appreciated the constant biblical focus and emphasis on God’s creative designs in nature.
My son loved this class
Review by Heather
This class was very interesting as well as hands on. My son enjoyed the projects and learned so much about God's amazing design.
Not sufficient enough
Review by Shannon
While going through the book and preparing the lessons for my child’s upcoming year, I found this curriculum very lacking. A paragraph or two to teach a concept is not enough in my opinion for a student to grasp what is being taught. The first 3 parts of the curriculum doesn’t have anything more then a paragraph or 2 and a few questions each lesson. The last quarter of the book starts to implement some experiments, but even those seem to be at an age level lower then what this book is geared to, and the lessons even then are still only a paragraph or 2.
