Fresh and exciting art
Review by Kathleen C
As a homeschool mom, I’m always on the lookout for an art curriculum that is approachable, engaging, and not overly complicated — and Art Level 1 checks all those boxes. The lessons are clearly laid out and kid-friendly, offering step-by-step instructions that make it easy for my children to follow even with minimal supervision. I appreciate that each project builds on basic techniques and gently encourages creativity, rather than pushing for perfection.
What I especially love is how the curriculum brings structure but still leaves plenty of room for my kids’ imagination. The variety of media and projects helps keep our art time fresh and exciting — from simple pencil sketches to painting and creative design. It’s become a delightful part of our weekly homeschool rhythm, combining skill-building with fun. For any homeschool family wanting a solid and gentle introduction to art, this book is a wonderful place to start.
Art as Worship!
Review by JoyfulMommy
I feel like the introduction to this book is a must-read for every parent! Have you ever considered art as a form of worship? I love how Julia's heart of love for Christ and adoration of God come through in each lesson and direct us to worship Him through art! These lessons are well laid out and simple to incorporate into little ones’ school days twice a week or whenever you want to pull out a simple but meaningful art lesson. It actually works well for a wide age range if you want to do it family style - my fourth through K students all enjoy it!
Godly and Practical
Review by JC
I have two things that I've wanted in an art curriculum: that it glorifies God instead of man, and that it teaches foundational art skills. As a Christian, it frustrated me when even Christian art curriculum would spend all their time talking about historic artists, some of whom were a far cry from God honoring. While there is value in studying history and beautiful art, it missed the mark of glorifying God, the original artist, over the work of man. Art Level 1 teaches children to look to God and His creation and actions. There are references to Biblical narrative and suggestions to go out and explore art through observing God's creation.
As an artist, I despise cut and paste art projects. They have their place, but when the whole of a child's art education is learning to cut out someone else's pictures... well that's not really teaching them any useful skills. Yet many programs I've looked at are either asking way too much for the child's age, or teach them very little about foundational art skills. Not so here. The author covers lines, basic shapes and how to use them, the color wheel, warm and cool colors, and more. For an artistically inclined child, it's a bit easy for first grade. My daughter could have easily done it in kindergarten or even preschool, but there's also nothing wrong with easy. My daughter loves it all the same. She's just flying through it faster is all.
Great for beginning artists
Review by LaceeC
Art Level 1 is a great addition to the Master Books line up! So many skip art because it is hard to do or messy or they don’t see the value in it. Art is a great thing to explore, especially for little kids, as it can be another avenue that we use to worship the Savior. This curriculum takes the students through the basics of drawing, coloring, sculpting, and more in two days per week, geared towards 6-7 year olds…. Each lesson starts with Art Talk - a short tidbit before the instructions about what your student will be learning. God is present in each lesson as His creation is the inspiration for art. There are parent notes within the lessons to help guide the parents with alternative options, or the why behind doing certain things. Most of the activities are simple and not very messy. There are optional projects, called extra fun, that will be messier and you can skip if you don’t want to do them, skipping won’t take away from the lessons. Overall it has a great layout with simple, fun, and easy to accomplish lessons that shouldn’t take most students too long to do, making it easy to add to your school year. Most supplies needed you will have at home as well.

One thing I do not like is how they teach to hold a pencil… it is not the traditional way, nor is it the way taught in other Master Books curriculum… so decide for yourself what makes the most sense for your family and skip this if you need to.
Great first introduction to art
Review by Michelle
I was very excited to see an art course for younger students that supports a biblical perspective. The majority of art courses available in the homeschool world are secular or claim to be Christian by just slapping a verse on in certain areas. In this course, biblical truths are interwoven into fun art exploration and techniques.

I think the majority of first graders I have had the opportunity to spend time with will probably benefit from this course, I did however find that it was much too easy for my first grader.

My older child would likely have liked it, this one however seems to enjoy the bible connections to art concepts more than she actually learns something she doesn't know or can't do. If you are looking for a curriculum for a child with not too much confidence in art this might be a good option, while a child with a keen interest in art loving to do all sorts of artistic projects in their free time might be underwhelmed and need more.

My daughter as an example would have loved this course in Kindergarten while I think my son would have been fine with it in first grade
The perfect art course for my youngest students!
Review by Michelle C.
I have hoped for years that Master Books would create an Art Course for younger elementary students and not only is it finally here, but they also hit it out of the park! In my opinion, this course is perfect for ages 3 to about 8 years old depending on the ability and interest of your student. Some of the pages are perfect for my 4-year-old, but many of the projects would be too challenging for her to do independently. My 7-year-old however, enjoys and can do the projects even though some of the other pages are too easy for her. Most of the pages can be completed with simple coloring or drawing utensils, and the project or craft pages that require more supplies still usually only require easy-to-find items. This art course is full of color and Biblical truth and with its flexible 2 days-a-week format, it is practical and easy to add into any homeschool schedule.
Simple Yet Effective
Review by JennForbes
I am not an artistic person by nature but my kids love all things crafty. My 4 year old and 6 year old are thoroughly enjoying this course in learning the basics of art with Bible interwoven in each lesson. This is a course that doesn’t require a lot of time and prep for the parent which is great.
I have used Living Art Lessons for my older children and adapted it for my younger kids. This is so wonderful to have a course for their level of abilities without adaptation.
Lovely course
Review by Dustie
Julia Akers has made such a beautiful course to introduce children to art! My older daughter took and thoroughly enjoyed her Academy course for high school students, so I’ve been excited to get this course for my younger children. Julia’s heart for the LORD shines through in her instruction. She helps students use their creativity to worship our Creator.
The course is set up for 2 short lessons each week. They’re definitely kid-friendly, both in content and in length. The supplies are things most homeschool families have on hand, or they’re inexpensive and easy to obtain. The lessons are fun and simple. The activities encourage creativity. I also really like that she makes things like using a smock or apron and placing a table cloth or mat down part of the instructions. I think it helps kids develop good habits.
Overall, I think this is one of the courses that will be memorable for my kids. I’m thankful for an art introduction course that is focused on worshiping the Creator rather than creation.
Lots of fun!

I love this intro to art! Its full of fun and doable crafts/activities for young children. It teaches basic art concepts like lines, colors, and shapes but in a fun way that's enjoyable for kids and easy for adults to facilitate.
Flexible and Fun!
Review by Charity
My 5.5yo constantly has a crayon, marker, or paintbrush in her hand. She is so excited to learn more about art with this course! She had powered through most of her K workbooks so I was excited for something for her to use for "school" that would capitalize on her interest in art and keep her busy so that she wouldn't advance too quickly into the 1st grade level academic courses.

So far she is loving the printouts, but can't wait until the physical book releases since we mainly print black and white. Having the PDF has been helpful though for printing multiple copies of some of the activities because often my nearly 3 yo often likes to join in. The 10 and 8 yo aren't opposed to tagging along either.
The instructions are nice and clear and the page layout is simple and uncluttered. We love the Bible lessons and fun coloring pages and the helpful parent's notes that explain the purpose of the other activities. These notes are especially helpful for me as I consider how to adjust the activities for younger or older students. I love the options to expand and dig deeper with some of the skills that are taught.

Thank you Master Books and Julia Akers for producing this flexible and fun course!
