Godly and Practical
Review by JC
I have two things that I've wanted in an art curriculum: that it glorifies God instead of man, and that it teaches foundational art skills. As a Christian, it frustrated me when even Christian art curriculum would spend all their time talking about historic artists, some of whom were a far cry from God honoring. While there is value in studying history and beautiful art, it missed the mark of glorifying God, the original artist, over the work of man. Art Level 1 teaches children to look to God and His creation and actions. There are references to Biblical narrative and suggestions to go out and explore art through observing God's creation.
As an artist, I despise cut and paste art projects. They have their place, but when the whole of a child's art education is learning to cut out someone else's pictures... well that's not really teaching them any useful skills. Yet many programs I've looked at are either asking way too much for the child's age, or teach them very little about foundational art skills. Not so here. The author covers lines, basic shapes and how to use them, the color wheel, warm and cool colors, and more. For an artistically inclined child, it's a bit easy for first grade. My daughter could have easily done it in kindergarten or even preschool, but there's also nothing wrong with easy. My daughter loves it all the same. She's just flying through it faster is all.
Good first introduction to art

I was very excited to see an art course for younger students that supports a biblical perspective. The majority of art courses available in the homeschool world are secular or claim to be Christian by just slapping a verse on in certain areas. In this course, biblical truths are interwoven into fun art exploration and techniques.

I think the majority of first graders I have had the opportunity to spend time with will probably benefit from this course, I did however find that it was much too easy for my first grader.

My older child would likely have liked it, this one however seems to enjoy the bible connections to art concepts more than she actually learns something she doesn't know or can't do. If you are looking for a curriculum for a child with not too much confidence in art this might be a good option, while a child with a keen interest in art loving to do all sorts of artistic projects in their free time might be underwhelmed and need more.

My daughter as an example would have loved this course in Kindergarten while I think my son would have been fine with it in first grade
Fun Introduction to Art

Art Level 1 is a fun way for kids to learn more about art. The course is well organized in a way that makes it easy to plan and prepare, including a master supply list and a 36 week schedule that includes two art lessons per week. The pages are colorful and the lessons are simple enough for a first grader, yet even older children will enjoy some of the lessons, especially the projects. I appreciate that the art lessons are presented from a Biblical perspective, and Bible stories are woven into the lessons and projects. This book could be used at home or even in a Church setting.
The perfect art course for my youngest students!
Review by Michelle C.
I have hoped for years that Master Books would create an Art Course for younger elementary students and not only is it finally here, but they also hit it out of the park! In my opinion, this course is perfect for ages 3 to about 8 years old depending on the ability and interest of your student. Some of the pages are perfect for my 4-year-old, but many of the projects would be too challenging for her to do independently. My 7-year-old however, enjoys and can do the projects even though some of the other pages are too easy for her. Most of the pages can be completed with simple coloring or drawing utensils, and the project or craft pages that require more supplies still usually only require easy-to-find items. This art course is full of color and Biblical truth and with its flexible 2 days-a-week format, it is practical and easy to add into any homeschool schedule.
Lovely course

Julia Akers has made such a beautiful course to introduce children to art! My older daughter took and thoroughly enjoyed her Academy course for high school students, so I’ve been excited to get this course for my younger children. Julia’s heart for the LORD shines through in her instruction. She helps students use their creativity to worship our Creator.
The course is set up for 2 short lessons each week. They’re definitely kid-friendly, both in content and in length. The supplies are things most homeschool families have on hand, or they’re inexpensive and easy to obtain. The lessons are fun and simple. The activities encourage creativity. I also really like that she makes things like using a smock or apron and placing a table cloth or mat down part of the instructions. I think it helps kids develop good habits.
Overall, I think this is one of the courses that will be memorable for my kids. I’m thankful for an art introduction course that is focused on worshiping the Creator rather than creation.
Great elective!!

Want to incorporate art lessons to your schedule but worried that it will take too much time or be more than your child (or you!) can handle?
Well, worry no more because Master Books has got you covered! This Art Level 1 is perfect for kids around the 5-9 age- incorporating fine motor skills, scripture and art projects as well as great tips and tricks that will help set up your child for future artistic pursuits.
The best part is that it’s only two days a week and if you are hesitant to do even that, go ahead and spread it over two years, once a week. If you have an art loving child this can also easily be done over a long summer break so boredom will be held at bay.
Definitely grab one of these as soon as you can!
art for the young student
Review by Barbara D.
My daughter has been wanting to do art and I was trying to find something developmentally appropriate that was not extra work for a busy mama. This fits that requirement. Keeping in mind the book was designed for the average first grader where their had is still developing, this is perfect. At first glance, as a mom I thought is was very basic. It is for an adult, but not for a 6 year old. It is teaching the basics of colors and the color wheel, but also shapes, coloring in the lines, and using a paint brush. There are a few activities for those which gluten sensitive allergies to revamp, but can be done. (pasta and playdough)
I do like all the Biblical references. I love the rainbow that Noah saw and they make their own with small pieces of paper and Josephs coat they work with strips of paper.
I do recommend this book for early elementary. (K-2) Some pre-k can do some of the activities and it is good for someone in older grades with delays.
