Overview

For grade 2

Spark your child’s creativity with Art Level 2 a hands-on, open-and-go, Scripture-based art curriculum designed to build confidence and skill. With purposeful projects such as step-by-step animal drawings, paper bag puppets, paper maché animals, mosaics, lantern building, and dioramas, art time becomes a meaningful adventure that connects creativity, observation, and faith.

Art Level 1 is not required before using Art Level 2, as long as students have comparable readiness: pencil grip, basic lines and shapes, and following simple instructions.

Art Level 2 takes second graders on a full-year creative journey through God's animal kingdom, weaving together narrative, skills-based exercises, and hands-on exploration to help children see and worship God through art. Along the way, each animal brings natural science facts into the mix, making this a curriculum that covers more than one subject.

Course Objectives

  • Explore God’s creation and see it as His masterful work of art.

  • Learn how to worship God with art by beginning with God’s Word.

  • Learn about lines, shapes, colors, and more through fun activities.

  • Develop hand and eye skills needed to gain independence in creating art.

A Course That Makes Teaching Art So Easy

Just two 30-minute lessons a week are all it takes to give your child a full year of meaningful art education. The textbook doubles as a workbook, so your child's activity pages and your read-aloud narrative passages are all in one place. No hunting for materials, either: each lesson includes a supply list of simple household and craft items like uncooked macaroni, wooden craft sticks, tempera paints, and ribbon, so you're always prepared before you open the book.

Templates in the back give you a head start on several projects, and an answer key handles the fact-based exercises for you. Every third week, your child works through a satisfying multi-step project like a drawing, a sponge painting, a lantern, or a diorama, the kind of finished piece they'll want to keep.

Art Instruction and Activities

  • Lessons introduce key artistic vocabulary your child will actually use: symmetry, pattern, value, form, perspective, and texture. They'll explore the color wheel from primary to secondary colors, discover the difference between cool and warm colors, and practice mixing colors themselves.
  • Simple skills like tracing, lacing, molding, and cutting are practiced first in focused, low-pressure exercises. Then those same skills are put to work in multi-step projects that result in something your child will want to show off, like a beautiful lantern made from craft sticks and tissue paper, or handprint zebras peeking through waving grass.
  • Worksheets provide structure and practice; projects open the door to creative expression. Together, they give you the framework that makes teaching art at home feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
  • Activities across the year include fingerprint art, paper mosaics, playdough sculptures, wax-resist watercolor painting, step-by-step drawings in a simplified style, sponge painting, a wax paper melt, and origami paper folding.

Eye Spy: Noticing God’s Glory

This curriculum will build your child’s faith through the Eye Spy moments that invite students to pause and look for God’s character reflected in art, creation, and everyday life. These guided prompts connect each lesson’s art skill to Scripture, helping children see how God's design, order, and attributes show up in the world around them and training young eyes to view creativity and creation through a Christ-centered lens.

The Progression from First Grade's Art Level 1

Art Level 2 assumes basic pencil and scissor proficiency and builds on those skills with greater precision and independence. Step-by-step drawing becomes a core skill, projects grow slightly more sophisticated (drawing + cutting + assembling), and children begin developing their own artistic style through small creative decisions about their work.

Encourages Creativity
Review by Kathleen C
As a homeschool mom, I’ve really appreciated how simple and approachable Art Level 2 is. The lessons are short, easy to follow, and build confidence without overwhelming my child. Art can easily get skipped in a busy homeschool, but this program makes it doable—and even enjoyable.

I also love that it encourages creativity rather than perfection, which has helped my child relax and have fun with art. From my perspective, it’s very open-and-go and doesn’t require any special preparation or art background.

Overall, it’s been a gentle, stress-free way to include art in our homeschool, and that’s exactly what we needed.
The Best Christian Art Program
Review by JC
As an artist myself, this series is turning out awesome!
I am picky because of my background. I also recognize that I'm biased towards my own style, so I want to help rather than be the main source of art instruction for my children. I love that this series adresses art fundamentals, creativity, observation, and most importantly, doing it for God's glory. Every other program I've looked into falls short in one or more of these areas.
Lest you be concerned, this is not just a repeat of Art 1 with a few extra activities. While you can do this one without having done level 1, it definitely is a step up. There is more age appropriate depth, and I think it is well suited to a 6-8yr old depending on their interest and skills. I can't wait to see this series through to the end. Julia knows her stuff and has done a great job. I'd love to see her do a calligraphy course too in the future as well.
Art 2
Review by Santina
Art 2 is a colorful, engaging art program. It is only two days per week and an elementary art curriculum that truly feels open and go. It provides a foundation for a proper pencil grip and encourages the student to take care to do their best work. Skills build slowly and the focus is on using creativity.
An Excellent Intro to Art!
Review by Becky V.
I love the heart behind this Art Level 2: teaching art as a form of worship. The focus is not on our own creativity, but on seeing art in nature and using art to glorify God. It is set up to use 2 times a week, making it a perfect addition to your homeschool routine. The lessons begin at a very basic level, slightly below a second grade level in my opinion, but increase in difficulty as you go through the book. This makes it perfect for using with multiple ages.

A daily supply list, as well as a lesson-specific supply list, makes preparation simple. Many of the supplies are common things that are found around the house. Activities include a mix of projects, coloring pages, and drawing exercises, offering plenty of variety.

Although we did not use Art Level 1, we have previously used Handwriting: A to Zoo from Master Books, and the art lessons and projects in this curriculum remind me of the style used there. Because of that positive experience, we are looking forward to using Art Level 2 next year!
Fun and Creative
Review by Lexie
This twice weekly for one school year art book was a lot of fun to go through. The book is extremely colorful and has Bible stories and lessons intertwined with exciting sensory friendly lessons. Sometimes art books can get repeatitive, but I found this book to cover a wide array of art lessons and crafts. As a mom of 7, many of these were things I had done with my first daughter in early elementary but hadn't since then. Sometimes we get busy in life and forget little things as our younger children are getting older, so I appreciate this book as it is encouraging me to find those fun crafts to do with my younger children. We especially liked the shaved crayon suncatcher and nature's hedgehog. Thank you for creating art that encourages us to explore the kitchen and even outdoors for supplies.
Such a fun, well planned course!
Review by Michelle
This new Art curriculum is definitely a lovely resource for busy moms. It takes away the mental load of coming up with art projects and developmentally appropriate activities. From my experience the level is spot on with what many kids can do reasonably independently at this age while you continue with lessons for the older siblings. I love the bible tie ins and the use of multiple different mediums. This is definitely a fun one to add to your school bin!
Easy to use, fun, Christ-centered art for kids!
Review by JoyfulMommy
My twelve-year-old daughter got excited when she saw this course and asked to do it with her younger siblings. I love the Christ-centered approach to worshiping the Creator through lines, textures, etc. and looking for the “eye spies” of God’s hand in creation or art. The course is easy for my daughter to teach, and even the two-year-old enjoyed coloring her own page and “helping” to make her kitty puppet! There is a nice variety of crafts, many very clever ideas like coloring a picture with pasta and coloring the pasta for a really neat effect. I foresee many happy times and special memories as they increase their skills and appreciation for the beauty in God’s creation through this art course!
Delightful, Engaging, and Creative
Review by Laurie
This art course has such a nice mix of drawing, painting, coloring, and crafts. The course also focuses on many animals and nature, which is fantastic for this age range, around 2nd grade. The course can easily be adapted to include siblings. My daughter thoroughly enjoys this course and typically wants to work on multiple days in a setting. This art course is a great addition to the MasterBooks Curriculum. I hope they continue this series through all elementary levels.
So fun!!
Review by LD
Whether you’ve done level 1 or not, don’t hesitate to get this course. While it says 2nd grade, you can easily incorporate this over a range of grades for a great family enrichment time.
Think you don’t have time to add one more thing or figure out what you need to make it happen? Well Art Level 2 is only 2 days a week, comes with a list of easy to find supplies needed each week and great instructions to help you teach your kids.
A good way to incorporate art as an elective to your homeschool days.
Beautiful and fun!
Review by Dustie
This series has been highly anticipated in my home. My youngest children are 6 and 8 years old, and they are so excited to have this. Julia Akers has done such a beautiful job on these books. I love that she shows little ones the truth that their talents and skills are blessings from the LORD and should be used to honor Him. This book naturally follows book 1, but it could easily be used if your child has not completed book 1.
It is so much more than a coloring book or a book of suggested projects, like many early elementary level art books. It is filled with fun projects that encourage individual creativity and development of artistic skills. The projects are simple and fun, and they require supplies that most homeschool families have already. There are also several memorable projects that could be made into gifts for family members.
I’m delighted to have another level of this series. It fits easily into our homeschool week, especially since it is only scheduled for two lessons per week. It gives the children something fun to look forward to.
