    Art Level 3 takes third graders on a full-year creative journey through the fruit of the Spirit, pairing rich art instruction with Scripture so students grow in both skill and faith. Each unit introduces a new fruit — from love and joy to gentleness and self-control — anchored in a specific passage from God's Word. As the year unfolds, students don't just learn to make art; they learn why making art matters.

    A Course That Makes Teaching Art So Easy

    Just two 30-minute lessons a week give your child a full year of meaningful art education. Every third week, students complete a hands-on project that pulls together the skills they've been building: sculpting with clay, weaving, oil painting, paper collage, three-dimensional painting, and more. The textbook includes supply lists, project resources, and an answer key, so everything you need is in one place before you open the book.

    Art Instruction and Activities

    • Lessons build on prior knowledge and introduce new vocabulary and techniques, including tints and shades, color theory and shadows, pointillism, optical illusions, perspective, composition, and the rule of thirds. Students move from recognizing these concepts to applying them in their own work.
    • Skills progress in complexity across the year: students begin with color mixing and still life, then advance to three-dimensional forms, multimedia art, oil painting, and abstract composition.
    • Worksheets build foundational knowledge; projects open the door to real creative expression. Together they give you the structure that makes teaching art at home feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
    • Activities across the year include watercolor painting, oil pastel drawing, clay sculpting and weaving, pointillism, paper collage, multimedia painting, three-dimensional painting, abstract art, still life drawing, and perspective studies.

    The Fruit of the Spirit Through Art

    This curriculum builds your child's faith by anchoring every unit in God's Word. The nine fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5 form the backbone of the course: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    Three additional biblical virtues, truth, humility, and mercy, round out the year with the same Scripture-first approach.

    Love comes alive through John 15:12–13. Joy is explored through Psalm 16:11. Peace is studied through John 14:27. Each theme connects to specific art skills, so students aren't just memorizing a list; they're living it out through what they create. By the end of the year, your child will have built a portfolio of work that reflects the character of God.

    The Progression from Art Level 2 for Second Grade

    Art Level 3 assumes comfort with basic drawing, cutting, and following multi-step instructions, and builds on those skills with greater precision, independence, and creative decision-making. Techniques grow more sophisticated: students move from tracing and simple shapes into perspective, composition, and multimedia work. Projects require more steps and more judgment, helping students develop a real artistic voice as the year progresses.

    Spiritual and artistic development

    I love Julia Akers’ approach to art and seeing it as a means of glorifying the Creator. This book delves into more advanced techniques than prior levels (as you would expect) such as perspective, foreground/background, color wheel, etc., but students would not have to complete prior lessons to dive into this one. The storyline with Mr. Roy G. Biv is a fun addition as he introduces the theme for each week, which always includes a new color and associates it with a fruit of the Spirit and relevant Scriptural meditation, as well as ways those qualities can be portrayed in art through that color (for instance, blue represents things that are cool, calm, and peaceful and is associated with peace as the fruit of the Spirit). Art studies and fun projects combine to build observation and artistic skills. Set up as a two-lesson-per-week course, this is an achievable art class that will help students grow both spiritually and artistically.

    As a homeschool mom, I really appreciate curriculum that makes learning enjoyable without adding a lot of stress to our homeschool day. MasterBooks Art Level 3 has been a wonderful resource for teaching art in a simple, engaging, and meaningful way.

    The lessons are easy to follow and give children opportunities to learn about different art concepts while actually creating something of their own. I love that the projects encourage creativity while still providing enough guidance for children to feel successful.

    One of my favorite things about this curriculum is how easy it is to incorporate into our homeschool routine. The lessons don't feel overwhelming, and the activities give my child a chance to slow down, be creative, and develop new skills.

    Art Level 3 has been a great addition to our homeschool. I would recommend it to other homeschool families looking for an enjoyable, structured art curriculum that encourages creativity and makes art approachable for children.

    Art level three 3 builds off of the skills learned in previous book, but it is definitely approachable for a child with no previous instruction. That's a hard balance to strike, and I think Julia did it well. The fruits of the spirit theme is fun one. The student also gets to dig deeper into color theory, perspective, and a wide variety of techniques and materials. The added art studies are fun too. It's an important art skill to be able to look at an artwork and ask "How did they do that, and how can I do the same thing?" This is a wonderful art curriculum and a Biblically based one at that. What more can you ask for?

    This art course is both enjoyable for the teacher teaching and the student learning. The course is set up in a user-friendly way. It lets you know in advance what supplies are needed for that day. It also includes an easy-to-follow schedule. One of the biggest highlights is that the course is set up so multiple kids in different grade levels can learn together. Both my daughters are still working through this course and thoroughly enjoying it.

    I love the heart behind Art Level 3: always putting God’s Word as the highest priority in every art lesson. The importance of art being a form of worship continues to be woven throughout each lesson.

    This course is set up to use 2 times a week. The lessons continue to build upon what was covered in Art 2, targeted at a grade 3 level, but flexible to use with multiple ages. The course begins with review and then slowly introduces new concepts while focusing on the fruits of the Spirit.

    A daily supply list, as well as a lesson-specific supply list, makes preparation simple. Many of the supplies are common things that are found around the house. I love how easy it is to implement this course and my daughter can’t wait to add all of the projects to her art portfolio!

    We absolutely loved Art Level 2, and are looking forward to diving into Level 3!

    Such a beautiful introduction to art concepts through getting to know our Creator better. The characters in the book delightfully introduce concepts and help them feel more approachable. I like that it is an incremental step up from the previous Art level with a bit more reading and in the concepts. The addition of a few famous classic artists is a nice introduction as well. I like that they weren’t focused on so parents have the option whether to point them out and discuss the artist.

    Art Level 3 is very nicely done. It gets challenging with each lesson and helps students grow in their knowledge and ability. I like that the big focus of this course is on God. Everything points back to God. Students also learn different art techniques, The lessons are engaging, but not overwhelming. It seems to be suited more for Grades 1-3. It maybe not as challenging for Grades 4 and higher. I started it with my 4th grader, and she felt it was not challenging enough. She just started though, and I can see that the course becomes more challenging as it goes, so we will see what she thinks once she proceeds to more challenging parts. Otherwise, the course is informative and engaging.

    Julia Akers is such a talented artist and educator and her love for the Lord continues to shine through her books! I was curious to see how well this series would grow to meet the child developmentally as the levels progressed, and I was definitely impressed with level three! It's written in a way that feels a lot more grown up than the first two books but it isn't over the head of your average third grader or advanced second grader. I definitely think you could have an older student join in as well without it feeling babyish. There are definitely a lot of principles that my nearly 11 year old has not been taught yet. I plan on having her join in with my third grader for some of the activities. I feel like there's a lot more things that can be done independently without too much crazy craftiness but still a lot of variety of materials and techniques. I especially appreciate the hand-eye coordination/ fine motor skills exercises woven throughout the course, but my favorite part is how well she weaves in scriptural principles into the teaching of art. This one is themed around the Fruit of the Spirit!

    I love having a pdf version to print out extras of some of the activities but this book is more color intense so I did go ahead and buy a physical copy so that I won't have to make as many printouts since my colored printer is not very reliable or economical.

    We are excited for this next installment in the Art series! This curriculum is scheduled for two days / week, which is enough to make good progress throughout the year, but not overwhelming. We like the mixture of learning art techniques, working on projects, and learning more about the fruit of the Spirit. I love the way that the focus is on God and His creation, and that our inspiration comes from Him. The book is laid out in a thoughtful, colorful, easy to follow way. The course is designed for grades 1-3, but some of my older students are also interested in working through this book. We hope this art series continues!

    Compared to the first two levels of Art, this is Julia's best work yet! These Art courses just keep getting better! Art Level 3 has progressed in difficulty and is clearly designed for mid-elementary students with some prior exposure to art instruction. In this course, students learn how to draw, sculpt, paint, create, and more. Biblical Truth is woven throughout the course as students are guided through the Fruit of the Spirit.

    One of my favorite things is that real paintings by famous artists are introduced and studied. I really appreciate that the author included these works in the course.
    In addition to a per-lesson supply list, one feature that many other MB courses don't have yet is a master supply list. If I want to buy everything needed for this course, I can simply check this list instead of creating my own from each lesson's supply list.

    This course is very well done, and I highly recommend it for elementary students!
