Master Books 2023 Senior Stories: Jacob's Advice to Other Homeschool Students

If you are curious how Master Books homeschool curriculum can help prepare your students for adulthood, this interview with Jacob Staggers will be a great help to you. Jacob, a 2023 high school homeschool graduate, shared his thoughts and experiences with us in the following interview. He impressed us with his confidence, his communication skills, and his future plans. Jacob participated in an interview with us as well. You can watch it here

What have been your favorite Master Books courses and why?

My favorite courses have been Intro to Economics and Civics and The Constitution. They were both very eye-opening. I learned how much our country has changed and drifted away from its founding. I found it interesting to learn how our government uses and misuses our money, and how the system is failing because of their mismanagement.

Did you use another curriculum before Master Books?

Yes, we switched about 4 years ago when I was in 9th grade from a literature-based curriculum. It was getting overwhelming with the amount of reading each day and lack of good clear directions.

Are you glad your parents decided to make the change?

I’m glad my mom decided to switch. Master Books is set up better and is way less overwhelming. Everything is clearly laid out.

What are your plans after high school?

After high school, I will be going to International ALERT Academy. It’s very similar to military training but, it has a Christian foundation. They teach several different types of skills to prepare people to be firefighter, pilots, divers, and tech rescuers. I’m interested in specializing in tech rescue.

Do you feel your faith is strong and that you are ready to hold tight to your faith in God and Jesus as you walk into your future?

Yes, we go to great church that really focuses on teaching the whole counsel of God. Master Books has also been a big part of growing my faith because the Bible and the gospel are incorporated into all the courses. It has given me a better understanding of how science and the Bible actually fit together.

How would you encourage other high school homeschool students?

1. Be diligent and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things.

I have had to be diligent and committed these last 2 years to be able to get all my schoolwork done. Having a job has made it a little challenging to get everything done that I need to do. There are nights I have had to stay up pretty late to make sure my schoolwork work gets done.

2. Trust the Lord and follow where he leads.

I have had to really trust the Lord to give me the strength and energy I needed to keep going and get my schoolwork done. He has definitely helped me to do all I need to do.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths."
