The story of Bombus the Bumblebee begins shortly after creation with Bombus busily buzzing between flowers lapping up nectar. The honeybees are slightly perturbed by Bombus bumping into them and beating them to the best flowers. Devising a plan to get Bombus to stop, they tell him that he's just too bulky to be flying and that he would be better suited to being on the ground crawling.

Bombus looks at all the other flying bugs and decides that perhaps they're right, so he stops flying and starts crawling. Then God shows up and corrects Bombus saying, "what did I tell you to do? Fly! So fly." The book concludes with some facts about bumblebees, most notably that their wings should not be able to support their bodies in flight, yet they do. There are also some bumblebee activities for children in the back.

This good-values storybook includes:

  • Parent/Teacher Activity Guide
  • Fascinating Science Facts

“This book held both mine and my children's attention and we all enjoyed it. I liked being able to teach them more about bumblebees without them knowing they were being 'schooled'. As a homeschooler, I can easily turn this into a fun unit study for all my children, since even my 9 year old liked listening in on the story.” — Sarah ★★★★★

“This was such a cute little book. I read it to my 7-year-old son and my 5-year-old daughter and they both really enjoyed it. Both of them stayed captivated by the book." — Amber ★★★★★

Great message, but...
Review by Theresa
The message of the book is great: God created you to be perfectly you, so don’t compare yourself to others. Bombus the Bumblebee overcomes bullying by hearing God, and embraces the unique way God created him.

I also like how the book ends with cool facts about bumblebees, and discussion questions and activities.

However, I don’t love the book for young kids. Bombus experiences a lot of shame about who he is (even before the bullying begins), and then the bullying honeybees are super mean. The story is also set very clearly on the new earth (before sin); which, as a Creationist, poses a theological issue for our family since the characters react in a post-sin manner of negative thoughts and actions.

While there are some good things about this book, I will skip reading it to my kids.

Review by Love2BeMom
The author had a great idea with this book. So many lessons to be learned from this book, like being different and getting bullied and teased, but also how God made us all unique and special with a plan and purpose. But the author missed a crucial topic. The book starts with God’s wonderful creation when everything was perfect. Without mention of the fall, Bombus gets teased for being different. It is written as if it all happened right at the beginning of creation. Sin did not exist in God’s original perfect creation.
If you can work your way around this and discuss it with your child, it is a great book with enchanting illustrations, fun facts about bumblebees and creative activity ideas at the end of the book. The “a talking time” at the back of the book has great conversation starter questions about experiences that led to hurt feelings.
Cute story with a great lesson.

This is a story of a bumblebee who is made fun of by other bees. They tell him he shouldn't fly because he is fat. At the end God tells him to fly because that's the way he was made. It teaches kids not to listen to what others say listen to what God says.
