A well-crafted presentation of whole-book or whole-work selections from the major genres of classic literature (prose, poetry, and drama), this course has 34 chapters representing 34 weeks of study, with an overview of narrative background material on the writers, their historical settings, and worldview.

The rich curriculum’s content is infused with critical thinking skills, and an easy-to-use teacher’s guide outlines student objectives with each chapter and provides a course calendar and the answers to the assignments and weekly exercises. Each chapter has five lessons with daily concept-building exercises, warm-up questions, and guided readings The final lesson of the week includes the weekly exam, as well as essays developed through the course of that week’s study, chosen by the educator and student to personalize the coursework for the individual learner.

Part of a series of 1-year, high school-level literature courses, this curriculum can be taught independently of the series or in sequence with author James Stobaugh’s other literature classes. It is also designed to work in conjunction with Stobaugh’s high school history curriculum and can be taught alongside his British history course.

Intense but Worthy

This college level-esque course is not for the faint of heart, but if your child loves British Lit, is a voracious reader and rises to a challenge, this is a perfect fit. I am impressed with the depth of thinking the assignment questions evoke. A wonderful curriculum for those dedicated to learning.
Looks awesome!

My daughter completed American Literature this year and has loved it. Both of my high schoolers, my son and daughter, are going to be completing this course during the next school year. The book choices look interesting. They are excited about it!
Good, but a lot of reading!
Review by Cara
This is full of good info, and selections of books. There is also a huge list of books that the guide says the child needs to have read all of those in full before they cover that chapter from the Literature book. (You buy them or rent or listen to audio etc.) One thing that I was surprised to find was that this does NOT have a 180 daily lesson guide. Disappointed with that. Hoping my child will enjoy this class and not be overwhelmed. :)

Well rounded literature course
Review by Andrea
As an English Lit major in college I was super excited to find this curriculum for my 11th grader. I love the way it covers actual books, not just excerpts. I feel that it teachers the student how to analyze a piece of literature and prepares them for college level courses. Highly recommend this course.
Lots of Reading
Review by Jennifer
I bought this because I was excited about the literature and history paralleling each other. The history looked interesting, but the literature had a huge list of books to read. Our library isn’t very big so I’d have had to buy the entire book list. We decided to go with something else. But if you have a great library and love to read a lot of books, this would be a fantastic program.
