Practical Math Curriculum
Review by SB
I am very excited about this Consumer Math curriculum. Learning how to handle personal finances (income, budgeting, spending, giving, saving, taxes) is such a necessary course that all students (and adults!) can benefit from. Approaching these topics from a Biblical point of view makes it even better. This course helps us learn what the Bible teaches about making wise financial decisions and how to be a good steward of all that God gives us.

The Student Textbook is colorful and laid out in an appealing and easy-to-read way. Color coded formulas and example problems are easy to follow. Example tax forms, tables and documents were helpful. The review and reference sections at the end of the book are also very helpful. The course material is arranged into four quarters:
Quarter 1: The Big Picture & Key Skills
Quarter 2: Budgeting
Quarter 3: Financial Decisions
Quarter 4: More Applications, Investments & Final Review.

I really appreciated the Keeping Perspective sections and the Case Studies. Scripture isn’t just sprinkled into the lessons; this course thoroughly incorporates Scripture and God’s principles on money and finances.

The Consumer Math Teacher Guide is a necessary component for the Consumer Math course. As with all Masterbooks curriculum, the Suggested Daily Schedule included with this course makes it easy for students to know what work to complete each day. Consumer Math is scheduled into 4 quarters, over a total of 180 days. The Teacher Guide contains the student exercise sheets that they will complete each day. The worksheets are colorful and easy to read. The headings at the top of each exercise clearly show what lesson and day the page is for, as well as which pages to reference in the textbook. The Teacher Guide contains 19 quizzes, 4 tests, and 1 final exam. There are also extra resources, such as templates for budgeting and tracking. There is an answer key in the back of the Teacher Guide, although it does not show how the answers were arrived at. There are separate, optional resources available for this course: Consumer Math Solutions Manual and Consumer Math Case Studies. I am excited for my children to use this Consumer Math course.
What Ive been looking for!
Review by Shannon
Student book- Ive been excited for this course to release and I was NOT disappointed! First, right off the bat, this course is visually appealing. Full of bright colors and laid out in a pleasing way! This is not the average boring black and white math book. I love the use of color to clearly show different parts of the problems in the examples given. This Course starts with Biblical principles for dealing with money and covers a wide range of topics that the student will be using in their daily life and especially as they move into adulthood (budgeting, taxes, buying a home, saving, debt and so much more). I would have really benefited from a class like this when I was starting out. This is a class for the real world and the lessons learned here will be used for a lifetime.

Teacher guide- This teachers guide continues with the features and expectations that a typical Masterbooks course has, but with appealing pops of color and nice visual spacing/layout. The daily schedule is clear and walks you step by step on what to do each day. The worksheets are thorough without being drill and kill. This class is not just math problems but is seeking to have the student really understand the why behind what they are learning with a Biblical starting point. This course will truly prepare the student with the tools they need to be successful financially. I love that real life examples are given, like comparing cell phone plans, dealing with utility bills, understanding interest, taxes, budgeting and so, so much more! This is truly a “life lesson” class that is invaluable.
Thorough and Straightforward
Review by Michele
This is a thorough overview of consumer math. It is done very practically and conversationally, which I think really benefits today’s learners. Each Day has a singular focus so large ideas, such as debt and interest are approached in bite-sized chunks. Scripture is relevantly and thoughtfully included throughout with frequent opportunities for the student to dig into Scripture and make their own applications. While this is a Math course, the calculation does not seem overburdensome. There are typically 2 pages to read each day about the concept, followed by 1-2 workbook pages in the Teacher’s Guide with calculations and application relevant to the student textbook reading. The progression feels natural and progresses meaningfully throughout the course. There is a test every 10 days, with a review on the 9th day.

The lessons on Taxes are practical and give the student information about tax brackets, filing status, and an introduction to all the concepts they will come across while filing their taxes, like ‘adjusted gross income’ and ‘deductions’ including graphics of associated tax documents for making relevant calculations. The exercises have both comprehension questions for those important concepts as well as straightforward real-life calculation questions.

Though the dangers of credit cards are mentioned, they are also noted for their convenience. Debit cards are not listed as an alternative, except as a side note in the lesson on checking account mechanics. Also, there are no alternative methods to debt listed for raising a credit score. I plan to have my student research this as an extension of this lesson, and we’ll probably listen to financial experts, like Dave Ramsey, periodically and analyzes any differences in how he addresses a topic. I wouldn’t say there are many differences in here, other than his absolute aversion to debt, for those wondering how it might compare.

Optional exercises for research or application are included throughout. A few examples are pricing a recipe and finding the cost per serving, This course is likely the most applicable course a student can and will take, covering so many aspects of their day-to-day life. There will be many opportunities to bring your student in on the family’s consumer activities and decisions to reinforce and extend what is taught in the lessons here. I anticipate many meaningful and fruitful conversations from the In Your Own Life sections found at the end of most exercises.
