In Courage to Stand: Profiles of Enduring Faith, John Stamper shares inspiring stories of courageous Christians who stood firm on God's Word, facing intense spiritual conflicts without wavering. Designed to support Bible study and devotional reading, this powerful book is a treasure trove for Christian families seeking to build godly character through the example of those who came before us.

Each chapter of Courage to Stand takes readers on a journey through the lives of biblical figures, historical icons, and contemporary heroes of faith. These profiles are framed through the lens of the story of the three Hebrew children—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—whose faith in God led them through the fiery furnace of Babylon. Their story, though over 2,500 years old, resonates deeply with Christians today as we navigate our own spiritual conflicts in a fallen world.

Stamper masterfully parallels the spiritual battles faced by these enduring figures with the struggles we experience today. He shows how, just as God was present with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, He is with us in our own fiery furnaces. Through these stories, you will find encouragement to stand courageously against the challenges in your life, holding tightly to the Lord and His promises.

This book offers more than just historical insights; it’s a guide for building spiritual resilience. With each story, you’ll see how others have overcome their “Babylon,” faced their “Nebuchadnezzar,” endured their “fiery furnace,” and experienced God's unwavering presence through it all.

Each inspiring story in Courage to Stand teaches three essential lessons drawn from Scripture:

  • The Need to Strengthen Ourselves in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6)
  • The Call to Encourage and Strengthen One Another (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
  • The Necessity of Remembering and Sharing the Works of God with the Next Generation (Psalm 78:4-7)

As Stamper writes, "This book is all about lifting up the name of Jesus and prioritizing the Word of God. The only reason I’m pointing to the people in this book is because they first pointed to Jesus."

Courage to Stand is a powerful resource for families, offering a wealth of stories that inspire courage, faith, and unwavering commitment to God’s Word. Whether used for family devotions or personal study, this book will encourage you to stand firm in your faith, no matter what spiritual conflicts you face.

Courage to Stand is a vital call for conviction and boldness in an age that demands everyone to bend the knee to the idols of political correctness. Drawing from Scripture and history, John Stamper has given us excellent examples of those who have stood for truth and righteousness in the past. These heroes provide a template for us to follow. I was stirred and challenged by this vital and timely book.

Courage to Stand by John Stamper is a desperately needed work in this age of cowardice. It is masterfully written and should be considered essential reading. There are powerful lessons and examples going back to ancient biblical history all the way up to the modern era that will inspire and encourage all who read it. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Courage to Stand exemplifies Jesus’ call to walk the narrow path. The real-life stories John Stamper showcases in his book give us the recipe for how to stand for what is good, moral, and Biblical in the midst of cultural pressure and persecution. In this inspirational book, each person of faith profiled whether Biblical or from recent history tells the true story of someone who stood when the consequences to do so cost them dearly. What I love best is how Stamper breaks down each person’s courageous stand and gives us the play-by-play for how we too can stand for Christ in our schools, jobs, and communities.

God knew I needed this book...
Review by Michelle C.
Courage to Stand is an outstanding book! It profiles the lives of several people throughout history, some from the Bible and some not, who had the courage to stand for Christ during difficult times. John Stamper's storytelling ability is excellent, which made for an enjoyable and interesting read. There are several application sections throughout each chapter that not only helped apply the story to my life, but it asked challenging questions and brought convictions. The author ties every chapter together with an overarching theme of Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon and if we will obey God even if that means facing the fiery furnace.

This book has had a personal impact on me. While reading the chapter about Jessica Tapia, I was going through something with some church leaders, and I didn’t know how I was being treated behind closed doors. I felt like things were being handled unfairly and I was trying to act in a Christlike manner, but I didn’t know how things would pan out. The story and application sections of this chapter were exactly what I needed to hear during those challenging days. Thankfully, what I was going through was not nearly as severe as what Jessica had to face but the Biblical truths still applied. That is what is so powerful about this book. All the stories can relate to us in some way and Stamper’s application sections make it even easier to see that. The questions he asks and truths he states were both challenging and encouraging.
Do we go through challenging times? Yes. But is God faithful through it all even if things don’t go as we hope? Yes.
Not only did I get to learn and enjoy reading about the lives of other people who were faithful to stand for Christ, but I walk away from this book truly feeling more equipped with the Courage to Stand!
Encouraging
Review by Julie
Courage to Stand is such a timely book that everyone needs to read. It was encouraging to read of people in our culture today as well as other notable persons in the past that have stood up and proclaimed truth even when they knew there would be consequences. I really enjoyed the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I love how he used examples of peoples fiery furnace, Nebuchadnezzar and Babylon in their lives; it helped to see our trials from the standpoint of a spiritual attack.
Must Read

Thank you to John Stamper and New Leaf Press for this beautiful compilation of stories of God’s precious faithful from past to present. And thank you Heavenly Father for giving them their courage to stand. Words are so powerful, reading about people who have gone through the fiery furnace, who would rather give up life than give up you is truly incredible. I pray for the future faithful and for a blessing on each person who reads or hears this book.
Inspiring
Review by SB
Courage to Stand is an inspiring book that explores the courage of men and women who took bold stands for the Lord, and encourages us that God can anyone. I enjoyed the variety of people that John Stamper chose to share the stories of: Bible characters, well-known people from the past and modern-day heroes. Each story contains several application sections that help the reader make personal connections. The Takeaways chapter at the end was helpful and encouraging.
Excellent resource to strengthen your faith.
Review by Amy
This book is an incredibly well-researched and well-structured book that highlights how God has given His people the courage to stand firm in the face of their own “Babylons” and “Nebuchadnezzars.” Drawing from biblical, historical, and modern examples, Mr. Stamper masterfully weaves together real-life accounts of unwavering faith, showing how God has always been faithful to those who trust in Him.

Each chapter provides an inspiring reminder that, just as God strengthened Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, He continues to give His people the boldness to stand for truth today. This is evident in the story of Eric Hovind, who has remained steadfast in defending biblical truth despite opposition. The stories are engaging, deeply encouraging, and filled with practical applications for believers facing challenges in a world that often opposes biblical values.

This book is an excellent resource for Christians seeking to strengthen their faith and find encouragement in God’s unchanging promises. I highly recommend it for individuals, families, and church groups looking for a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness.
A Challenge for All of Us

The examples of the men and women Courage to Stand has challenged me to examine my faith and make sure that I am truly anchored in Christ instead of being swayed by the influences of Babylon in the world around me. This book is a must read for adults and teens alike!
Love this book!
Review by Michelle
I found the way the author addresses common spiritual battles by reframing them as our own modern day Babylon refreshing. I think addressing the importance of taking a stance in this manner is an excellent way to reach the hearts of our young people. The practical application sections are an excellent component! I think this book is great for part of morning basket time or even as an independent read for teens. It would even make a really good listen, I might actually get the audiobook for road trips!
Encouraging read
Review by Barbara D
I have been wanting to go over the faith profile with my kids of a few of the people written about in this book. I never realized how would encourage me too! For example, when I read about Corrie ten Boom I love the focus on how God had prepared her and her family to be able to stand in WW2 as well as how she helped others after the war. It wasn't just about her during the time of WW2.
I do recommend reading John Stampers other book before this one as he does reference it, specifically in the second chapter. The first chapter is "The Three Hebrew Children". As the book goes on it does use this profile as a basis of comparison of each persons Babylon, Nebuchadnezzer, the golden image, and a fiery furnace. I did like the comparison for each profile as it gave a summary of what the person was going through and how God helped them through it.
It really shows how standing up for God's truth stands the test of time, no matter what the current worldview is.
I am loving going through this book with my son and reviewing what I previously read. One day, he may have to stand up, and this will help prepare him.
Inspiring!

Living in a modern-day Babylon, this powerful and encouraging book is filled with stories, past and present, of Christians and their Courage to Stand for their faith in GOD. Will you have the courage to stand when your faith is tested?
An Encouragement to Hold Fast
Review by LLB
Jim Stamper has written an excellent book going over the lives of biblical, historical, and modern day people who took a stand for God and His Word in the face of great difficulties. He includes the best concise synopsis I’ve ever read on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life. The author has a great way of explaining and summarizing the lives of these individuals for the reader’s contemplation of how they stood up for God in great difficulties as examples and encouragement for how we can stand as well. As our family has been in its own fiery furnace for the past 6 months, this was a great encouragement to continue to hold fast to God’s Word and courageously face the fire. Favorite quote: “Courage in the face of conflict isn’t just a one-time decision but one that we must choose again and again as we walk towards - and walk through- the fiery furnace, no matter how much hotter it gets.” P. 191
