Inspiring!
Review by JoyfulMommy
Jonathan Edwards said, “There are two ways of representing and recommending true religion and virtue to the world, which God hath made use of: the one is by doctrine and precept; the other is by instance and example.”

This beautiful, engaging, and informative book is a wonderful resource of “instance and example.” Short profiles of early church fathers are laid out with a nice amount of text on the pages with beautiful illustrations. Their teaching is well mixed into the biographical storyline, and martyrdom is presented as a reality without going into gory details. Learning about great Christian leaders in history and witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives fleshes out what Psalm 78:4 describes, telling “the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” I am grateful for this book, and pray our children will be inspired to imitate the faith of those gone before us! (Hebrews 13:7).
Wonderful!

I love each and every reader Marilyn Boyer has come out with for Master Books. It was something that was desperately needed. Starting with Jesus, Paul and John, Early Church Fathers tells about each person, who they were and what they were called to do. The ten chapters discuss the lives of Polycarp, Irenaeus of Lyon, Patrick of Ireland, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, John Calvin, John Knox, John Owen, and John Bunyan. The book includes a timeline which I find super helpful for understanding events of the past. The pictures are excellent. The content is easy to read and understand while packed with information.
A solid and inspiring introduction to early Christian history for young learners.

Marilyn Boyer succeeds in bringing history to life through engaging narrative. The book is written with a younger audience in mind (roughly ages 8–14), making complex historical and theological concepts understandable. Each chapter centers on a specific Church Father, highlighting not only their theological contributions but also their personal character, struggles, and devotion to Christ. The author presents the Church Fathers as men who upheld biblical truth in the face of heresy and persecution. The book encourages students to value sound doctrine and courageous faith. It effectively lays a foundation for understanding the roots of Christian doctrine and the courageous lives of early believers.
Early Church Fathers
Review by Santina
Early Church Fathers is a great resource for upper middle school and high school. It begins with an introduction of Jesus, Paul, and John and then goes on to talk about ten early church fathers including Polycarp, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, and several others. Each chapter begins with a page containing the early church father’s name, a phrase to describe them, a quote, a timeline, and labeled map with significant places. This is very helpful and provides great context before beginning to read. The timeline at the back of the book is colorful and engaging. Early Church Fathers is an interesting read on its own but would also make a great addition to a history or language arts program. The corresponding resource list at the back of the book is very helpful as well. I’m excited to see more books in this series.
Inspiring
Review by Yulia
Early Church Fathers is an encouraging and inspiring book of stories about 10 brave men who played a big part in the history of church. These men sacrificed the comfort and some of them even their lives for Christ. This is a great supplement to the study of the history of the church.

it can also be used in many different ways even as a reader for language arts. Marilyn Boyer did a great job, as always, putting the stories in an easy to understand way. Both: my almost 3rd and a 6th grader enjoyed the stories. The almost 6th grader can read them on his own. It is encouraging for the whole family to learn about faithfulness and love of these men for God. I highly recommend this book. It helps to get a different perspective in our culture of indulgence. It helps to refocus our sight on God and His values. It is very inspiring!
Wonderful book!

History was my least favorite subject as a child because I tried to learn names, dates and boring facts. Now as an adult, I enjoy history, and I am thrilled to have a book like this to help teach church history to my kids. This book presents ten biographies about men from early church history. It’s not just names and dates, but stories that are captivating page after page. There are maps, pictures, vocabulary words and geographical explanations within every chapter. Each chapter is broken up into sections of the story making it easier for the reader to digest and understand. At the end of the book, there is a timeline including all the people discussed, in addition to a glossary and a list of corresponding curriculum. This book is intended for students who are in middle school or older, but I enjoyed it as an adult. I can see this book becoming a beloved book in our family library.
Excellent!

We have loved the What a Character! series by Marilyn Boyer, so when I saw that she was also coming out with a Legends of Faith series, I was so excited! This book does not disappoint.

It starts with an introduction of Jesus, Paul, and John. It then proceeds to tell the stories of 10 early church fathers from Polycarp to John Bunyan. I am excited to have my middle schooler read this book as these men were foundational to the Church & knowing the history of the Church is so important to our own faith!

This would be great to use alongside any history curriculum, or as a stand alone book. Vocabulary is taught throughout, maps start out each biography to help place it, and the detailed timeline at the end really brings it all together! Definitely recommend!
Such a fun history book!

I love this book! The material presented is written in a way that is understandable for younger ages while giving details and information for older children and adults. Some of the people in this book may be familiar but I think there is much to be learned! With definitions throughout and beautiful illustrations, this book keeps everyone engaged from start to finish!
Inspirational Intro to Church Fathers
Review by Michele
We’ve been using this as a read aloud while my elementary students build with legos or play with math manipulatives. I was surprised at how well they paid attention and retained the information. I also really like the integrated scripture, as it gave opportunity to call back verses they may have come across in the past or begin hiding new truths in their heart. The 4 year old even joined in quoting John 3:16 with Us. The discussion has been enriching, and I appreciate the highlighted vocabulary words with definitions on the page so I can point out any that may be unfamiliar to them. I originally intended to use this alongside the World’s Story series for History, in the future, as I’ve never done a nonfiction read aloud, except for textbooks or during designated history time, but I think they are really engaging with the narrative style of these. we have enjoyed all of the Marilyn Boyer biography series books so far!

Each one is short enough to read in a single sitting, but would even be something I’d hand my high schooler for a little extension reading. I didn’t receive explicit instruction about early church fathers and I love that my children have the opportunity to do so in a narrative way, rather than a traditional-school-textbook memorization method that lacks the inspiration these stories can bring.
Great intro to early church fathers
Review by BuildingontheRock
Finally. A book on the early church fathers for elementary age kids. Parents will appreciate these short biographies as well. Brief introductions to the likes of Polycarp, Irenaeus, John Knox, John Owen, John Bunyan, and several others are provided along with maps of pertinent locations. Vocabulary words are defined throughout each chapter, with a condensed listing of the words and their definitions at the back of the book. Another great feature is a timeline at the end that shows how the lives of several of the men overlap in the progression on church history. Artificial intelligence was used to develop the illustrations throughout the book. At times the illustrations don’t seem to match the time period of the chapter creating a bit of a disconnect. Otherwise, this is a great introduction to our early church fathers that will hopefully inspire, encourage, and ignite curiosity for further reading and investigation.
