The Power of Words!
Review by Charity
When I first heard the title Famous American Statesmen and saw a few of the names listed, I wondered if it would be redundant since several of the men are also featured in the other volumes of this series. I was wrong! I love how these men are grouped together so that you can see the similarities and differences in the life events that influenced their career as a statesman. The story of Henry Clay, and a few others, were new to me and gave me a fresh appreciation for the sacrifices the American people had to endure on the path to independence. Each of these men's passionate messages have shaped our country and it's history as we know it.

I usually enjoy the audiobook for the What A Character, but the narrator was a bit difficult to listen to for 1 or 2 of the stories on this one. Otherwise, it is a great resource for discussion as you travel in the car or anywhere really. As always, some of of the stories may be intense for the tenderhearted as they contain some war related peril.
A fun way to learn history!
Review by Dustie
I love this whole series. It is full of fascinating and engaging stories of different characters throughout history. This particular book covers the lives of ten men who helped shape the United States. I appreciate how the author included information about their early days, as I think it makes the stories more relatable and inspiring to children.
This book is great for independent reading, and I t would make a great read-aloud or morning basket addition. These stories would also be really fun to include with corresponding history lessons, and there’s even a list in the back of the book that notes potential books to pair each chapter with. The audiobook is a great bonus!
Overall, I highly recommend this entire series of books for every home library. They’re such a fun way to learn bits of history.
Helpful when studying American history!
Review by SB
We have enjoyed the books in the What a Character! Notable Lives from History Series. We recently listened to the audiobook version of Famous American Statesmen, written by Marilyn Boyer and read by Will Stauff. While we missed out on the colorful illustrations found in the book version, we enjoyed the audiobook. The ten chapters covered ten important people in America’s history and were each about 15 minutes long to listen to. We prefer to listen to one story at a time, otherwise the stories tend to run together and it’s hard to keep track of who did what. This is a great supplement when studying American History. It was good to become more familiar with these historical figures, especially the ones that we were less familiar with. I appreciate having these great resources to introduce my children to these inspirational people.
An addition to a good history reader
Review by Barbara D
My kids and I like audio books so we can do handicrafts or something to listen to while driving. This series is perfect for that! The audio is clear and understandable. I don't know if it is cultural, but the author read the dates as "July eleven" instead of "July eleventh". It personally annoyed me, but that was just me.
My daughter and I loved learning from all the different people in history in this book. From Benjamin Franklin with how he learned from books on his own, to Francis Scott Key and how he wrote our Star spangled Banner, and all the others in this book. It was good to not have the Christian influence glossed over like many other history readers do, as many that was their driving force.
I do recommend this book.
