Wonderful Study
Review by Lexie
Our family attends a church where we sing hymns from hymnals, and we find that these hymns contain such rich words put to songs beyond what modern music contains. Studying hymn writers allows you to understand their stuggles and gives you a better grasp on why they chose the words to the songs they wrote. Reading their stories allowed our family to appreciate all that we sing - making our worship more than just words - but having a better understanding of the depth and meaning behind the songs.
Shows God's work in ordinary people
Review by Kathleen C
As a homeschool mom, I love finding resources that weave together history, faith, and character—and Legends of Famous Hymnwriters does this beautifully. Marilyn Boyer tells the stories behind beloved hymns in a way that captivates kids and helps them understand the deep faith and real-life struggles of the writers. Each chapter naturally opens the door for meaningful conversations about perseverance, worship, and God’s work in ordinary people. This book has been a delightful addition to our morning time and a wonderful way to connect our family’s love of music with our walk with the Lord.
Wonderful Hymn Study Resource
Review by Dawn P
This is a wonderful resource to supplement hymn study in your homeschool. It includes nine well written and in-depth biographies (each one 15-20 pages) of hymn writers, as well as ten shorter biographies for lesser known hymn writers. It can be used as a family read loud, an independent read, or to accompany a study of particular hymns.
Stories behind the hymns we love
Review by JoyfulMommy
We love hymns and learning about the authors and stories behind them. This beautiful, engaging, and informative book is a wonderful resource to add to our collection and give us a look into these hymnwriters’ lives from another angle. Short profiles of hymn writers are laid out with a nice amount of text on the pages with beautiful illustrations. Learning about these men and women of faith, and witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives, fleshes out what Psalm 78:4 describes, telling “the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” I am grateful for this book, and pray our children will be inspired to imitate the faith of those gone before us - and maybe write some hymns of their own!
Get to know the composers behind well-known hymns
Review by BuilidngontheRock
Famous Hymnwriters is a very moving reader that brings to life the composers of many well known hymns. Read it with a box of tissues. Prepare your heart to be challenged regarding its genuine devotion to God. Truly, as Fanny Crosby defined a hymn: “A hymn is the song of the heart addressed to God” (P. 94). Besides 10 main biographies, one per chapter, 10 additional shorter biographies are included at the end. A helpful timeline for reference concludes the book, as well as a glossary of words and their definitions that are interspersed throughout the book. This would make a wonderful companion to Foundations in Worship.
Good resource
Review by LD
Studying the old hymns are an excellent way to also learn theology, or about who God is, or how He works in our lives etc. So what better way to understand the heart behind these hymns than to study the people who wrote them. Because of how God worked in their lives and the experiences that they went through, they wrote these amazing hymns that have carried on through time. Seeing what they went through and how they took their hardships or blessings and turned it into something beautiful to share with the world is inspiring for all of us.
Having this book as part of your resources will add to the richness of your Homeschool.
A treasure for those desiring to appreciate the great hymns
Review by Michael
“Famous Hymnwriters” by Marilyn Boyer is a treasure for those desiring to appreciate the great hymns that have lasted for three hundred years. I enjoyed learning about the people behind the writing and composing of many famous hymns in history. Each chapter gave just enough information to appreciate who each hymnwriter was and also left the reader desiring to want to know more. I particularly found it interesting how many of the hymnwriters of old knew each other and worked together. I also found it interesting how even when they didn’t know each other, they influenced each other. In particular I think about Fanny Crosby. It turns out that on November 20, 1850, Fanny Crosby made Jesus Christ the Lord of her life! She was saved after singing Issac Watt's Hymn, "Alas and Did My Savior Bleed." She realized after singing the words of the last verse, "Here, Lord, I give myself away, His all that I can do", she had been trying to hold the world in one hand and the Lord in the other. She leaped to her feet crying, "Hallelujah!". As recorded in the book, Fanny was a deeply religious person, but she realized that her literary and social concerns had taken first place in her life. When she realized that, she repented and surrendered her life to Jesus Christ! With God all things are possible! Overall, this book demonstrates how God can use anyone for His glory!
great little book full of the stories behind many beloved hymns
Review by Michelle C.
I have been most excited about this fourth and final installment of the Legends of Faith series by Master Books. I have been striving for years to incorporate hymns and their writers into my homeschool more frequently and this resource is a fantastic tool to help me do just that. The first 9 chapters of Famous Hymnwriters tell an introductory biography of 9 people. I was pleasantly surprised to see that chapter 10 includes more short stories about ten additional people for a total of 19 hymnwriters presented in this book. Every chapter's title page displays a page of one of the hymns which I treasure and appreciate.
Just like the other books in the Legends of Faith series, there are several features including vocabulary words throughout each chapter, several timeline pages, a glossary and a list of corresponding curricula. Thank you Master Books for providing these short stories about 19 hymnwriters all within one small little book!
Wonderful Resource!
Review by Charity
This is the installment in the Legends of Faith that I have been most excited about! Hymns are a powerful method for passing down the legacy of faith to our children as we "sing and speak to one another in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs." One of the most precious parts of our day is when we gather as a family and worship together and sing God's truth in these hymns of faith. Learning the stories behind the hymns allows us to go deeper as we seek to "sing with understanding".

The book begins with 9 chapters, each focused on one hymn writer, and then the 10th chapter covers 10 shorter additional biographies so there are 19 total writers included in the book. After the biographies, there is a glossary of all of the words from the vocabulary boxes from the different chapters. There is also a convenient timeline which is great if you want to coordinate the hymn studies with the time periods in which they are written.

We like to use this series by playing the audiobook and following along with the PDF. The physical copies would be great for this as well. My students are still pretty young so we usually have to break up the readings into smaller portions since they are more intended for a middle-school audience.
Great Introduction to Hymnwriters
Review by Barbara D
Continuing in the Legends of Faith series with the Famous Hymnwriters. We have been loving this series so far and were excited to dig into another volume.
Many hymns we know and have sung but didn't know the story behind the hymn. This book is a great introduction to many of them. Some stories are very sad, but the author had a way of writing their hardships to be an encouragement. I was encouraged to read about the blind hymnwriter, Fanny Crosby, and her heart behind the hymns. I usually cry and can't get through reading about Horatio Spafford but in this retelling of his story I was able to.
Sometimes, with heroes of Faith I pre-read to make sure it is ok for my kids, and my kids love this book. It is a great way to show how God can use all circumstances in the hymnwriters life and end with beautiful praise music, that we still sing today.
