The reader is clear, but the audiobook does not stand alone without following along to the physical book. Every chapter has an overview and a hymn that the hymnwriter wrote. While reading the book I can see who the hymnwriter is, some basic information about them (like places and time they lived) as well as a picture of a page from a hymnal of a hymn they wrote. Very beautiful in the book, but not in audio. The title, any scripture, locations, and the pictured hymn are read like a long run on sentence. It is good to follow along with, but gets a little lost when listening to it.
I personally love the story of Horatio Spafford and there was no emotion when the events of his life were read.
The audiobook was easily understood, but is not a standalone item.
I do like that this book, as well as some of the others from this series are my sons new favorite audio books.
The audiobook performance was a bit underwhelming. I love that the books have excerpts of songs from the different writers but the way they are read in the audiobook was a bit distracting to me. I also find this narrator to have a bit of a lulling voice. Nevertheless, the message of the stories are powerful enough to counteract most of the minor imperfections in the narrration.
We like to use this series by playing the audiobook and following along with the PDF. The physical copies would be great for this as well. My students are still pretty young so we have had to break up some of the stories into smaller portions since they are more intended for a middle-school audience. This particular installment in the series works well without a text copy as long as you have access to a hymnal, but I do like the timelines and extra features in the back of the text copy.
