Great for spelling and grammar. Disappointed in the Pilgrims Progress companion book.
Review by Precious
I had high hopes for Master Books’ Pilgrim’s Progress curriculum, but unfortunately, it fell short in a key area. While the grammar and spelling instruction is excellent, I was extremely disappointed that they chose to use the original, old English version of Pilgrim’s Progress. No one speaks like that today, and the archaic language made it nearly impossible for my daughter to read and comprehend.

Even my husband and I struggled to understand the text, and we often had to read passages multiple times just to grasp the meaning. This made the comprehension questions especially frustrating—our daughter wasn’t learning from the material; she was just overwhelmed by it. Instead of fostering a love for literature, this curriculum discouraged her and made reading feel like a chore.

I truly believe Master Books would have done a much better job if they had selected a modern English version or an entirely different book written in a more accessible style. As it stands, this curriculum did not help my daughter at all and only left us all frustrated. I cannot recommend it for families looking for a practical and engaging literature program.
Great, as always!
Review by Paige
The material covered is excellent. I personally don't love navigating the Pilgrim's Progress, but that's because it seems hard to grasp. Others seem to like it - perhaps with a bit more focus on trying to understand it, it would be better. Either way, great series that covers things you might not think about in your homeschool journey.
More than I could have asked for!

My son completed LLFALE 4-6, over the years after we decided to bring our kids home from public school. We were both bummed that the series did not continue after 6. We moved on to other things for 7th and 8th, nothing that really impressed us much. So, when I saw that Master Books was releasing 7th-12th grade LLFLAE I was beyond excited, my son was now entering 9th grade and level 9 released just in time and we seriously hoped for this and it has been beyond our expectations. The work is thorough, while still keeping to the traditional short lesson approach. I am amazed at the depth of the lessons, and we have been greatly enjoying the added bonus of the literary analysis and worldview work. Great job with this course Master Books!
Love it!

This has been great! I especially love the Pilgrims Progress journal add-in. So excited these higher levels are coming out.
Exceeds Expectations!
Review by Becky V.
I have been so excited for the Language Lessons for a Living Education series to be continued for the upper levels, and Level 9 does not disappoint! I love that it guides you through Pilgrim’s Progress over the year. And ultimately, this is an amazing course that prepares students to be able to communicate and share their faith in whatever opportunities and challenges they may be presented with in their daily lives.

This book is targeted for grade 9 and up and is set up for the student to earn 1 English credit over a 36-week schedule, five days a week. A Bible and dictionary is required, as well as the Pilgrim’s Progress, journal edition.

Day 1 exposes students to new vocabulary, spelling words, Scripture memory, and a special feature that includes a variety of picture studies to hymn studies, and more of the like. Day 2 focuses on grammar and punctuation. Day 3 expands on communication skills. Day 4 is where Pilgrim’s Progress is studied and focuses on worldview and literary analysis. Day 5 is a review day of that weeks’ lesson. These reviews can be used as a weekly assessment if so desired. It is very organized in set up and makes it clear what your students can expect each day.

All assessments and grading keys are included, as well as grading rubrics and templates. Grammar study sheets are also included in the appendix, which are truly a great resource and tool to have!
Trusted Language Arts Course
Review by Laurie
This course has it all regarding language arts—reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation, communication, worldview & literary analysis. It's an all-in-one course requiring only this textbook, the classic book Pilgrim's Progress by Paul Bunyan, and some basic supplies. Our family has chosen the Living Lessons series over and over since we started homeschooling; I'm so happy they have continued this series into High School levels.
Wow!

We already use and love Language Lessons for a Living Education in our house, but this one is even better. It includes Language Arts, grammar, essay writing techniques, public speaking, communication skills, character training and even evangelism training.
It’s absolutely amazing! I love that this course uses Pilgrim’s Progress Journal as a required text. They work so beautifully together. I highly recommend.
I'm so excited this course has continued!
Review by Crystal
I am so excited that this book is out! We have used Language Lessons for a Living Education for the past several years and haven’t found anything comparable for the older grades. I also love that Pilgrim's Progress is integrated into the course.

This curriculum is very comprehensive, covering all the subject areas under the Language Arts umbrella. Each week covers grammar and punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, literary analysis, and writing. There are picture, scripture, and poetry studies throughout. I am so happy to find all these areas in the same course.

The course is written to the student and can be completed independently. There are a few sections that need a parent’s check off before proceeding, but they are clearly marked. I love how in-depth this curriculum is, yet it’s so simple to use.

Day one of the week is the special feature which is either a passage from Pilgrim's Progress Journal, which is required for this course (it can be bought at masterbooks.com) picture study, hymn study, or scripture study as well as vocabulary and spelling words. Day two of the week covers grammar and punctuation and application for them. Day three of the week covers communication including writing, verbal, and nonverbal, and technological communication.
