As a homeschool mom, I’m always searching for books that make history and faith come alive for my kids, and Legends of Faith: Missionaries for Christ does exactly that. Marilyn Boyer highlights missionary heroes with a storytelling approach that is both engaging and spiritually rich, making it easy for children to connect with real people who lived out courage, obedience, and sacrificial love. I love how each chapter naturally sparks discussion in our home—about trust, calling, and what it means to serve God wholeheartedly. This book has been a wonderful addition to our morning basket and a great catalyst for character training and discipleship.
Since my husband enjoys missionary stories, I encouraged him to read some of the book as well. Although he agreed that the stories are great introductions to the lives of several missionaries, the AI pictures were a major turn-off for him. He felt that since AI pictures were used, it feels like the book was just thrown together. He noticed some discrepancies between some pictures, and within one story, the pictures didn’t even look like the same person. Whenever I’m reading true stories to my kids, I try to show them real pictures if possible. I would have loved to see real historical pictures throughout this series whenever possible. Even some real photos at the end of each chapter would be a nice addition.
Just like the other books in the Legends of Faith series, there are several features including vocabulary words throughout each chapter, several timeline pages, a glossary and a list of corresponding curricula.
Overall, the Legends of Faith series is a wonderful resource to have if you don’t mind the AI pictures.
Though I have heard of several missionaries over the years, this book is a great introduction to many of them.
For my kids, this is a great introduction to some missionaries. As many of them have full books on, this book gives the reader an overview of their life to see if they want to study them deeper. Some missionary stories can be hard, but as a book for youth, it did not go into all detail for everything, but kept the main details there.
I was encouraged by all the stories of those who have given everything for Christ, and so are my kids. My kids love the story of Eric Liddell giving up being in the Olympics for Christ.
Even more encouraging for me is the effect of some of these missionaries had on what we can still see today.
I was very excited to dig into the Missionaries for Christ book. Several of the missionaries were new to me, but many were familiar. Overall most of the accounts were very informative, but I was a bit disappointed that some important facts were left out of Adoniram Judson's story.
Although there is mention that Judson appeared before the Congregationalists’ General Association in 1810 to ask for support as a missionary to India, what is not mentioned is that this petition created the very first missionary association in the United States. The second missionary association that was formed in 1814 to support his work in Burma (which was mentioned in the book) was formed because Judson had not only changed his destination but also his denomination. Since the denominations of many of the other missionaries were mentioned in the book, I thought it was odd that this switch to becoming a Baptist was left out since it is significant to his story.
Another fact that was left out was that he actually had three wives. The book only briefly mentions his marriage to Sarah in 1834 and moves quickly to the account of his death. Sarah actually died before Adoniram and he married his third wife, Emily, in June of 1846.
Also, Judson is credited as being the first American foreign missionary, but African American George Liele became a missionary in Jamaica around 1783. (Liele was not widely acknowledged as a missionary throughout history because of his background as a former slave in the American colonies.) Although this means Adoniram Judson was not actually the first American foreign missionary, he was one of the first, and he was also instrumental in starting the first modern missions movement.
I didn't notice any errors with the other missionaries' accounts, but I have not researched them as thoroughly. Overall, we really love this series and would still recommend this book. Hopefully the issues mentioned above will be corrected in future printings.
