Just what exactly is social studies, you may ask? Well, it includes the study of all kinds of people and places, some far away and some next door. In this book we talk about families, like your family in your house, and also lots of people close by, which we call a town or city, and finally about even more people in cities or outside of cities, all living in big places called countries.

Level one begins with children in their homes, helping them think about their lives from their immediate families and beyond, as well as learning about local governments. Includes four quests.

This is a daily adventure-based curriculum series that encourages families to explore the world together through four, nine-week quests and to understand it better from God’s perspective. It is designed with elements that make weekly learning fun and interactive, including:

  • Activity time
  • Word find time
  • Review time
  • My story journal

Learn all about the world while you discover more about your own. And make sure you pull out your Quest Collector Cards at the beginning of each quest. Your world map on the other side shows where you are in each lesson!

What Your First Grader Needs to Know
What Your First Grader Needs to Know

Homeschooling a first grade student is fun and exciting because children are naturally inquisitive and curious at this age, eager to develop their skills and learn about the world around them. But what exactly does a first grader need to know? Carrie Lindquist, homeschool mom of 3 and Master Books curriculum author, is here to walk you through the skills your student will be developing during this foundational year.

Good but simple

We like the picture and quick info about places around the world. I wish it was a little more indepth though
Lovely and fun if you don't mind tweaking it a bit!

We found this when my son was in 2nd grade. He loved the pictures, stories, "explorations", and gentle lessons. I found some things were a bit out of proportion, at least for our family. Mostly, there were too many writing and talking elements for us. If you're only homeschooling one, the constant "tell your teacher" might work fine. I realize that narration is an extremely important skill and a hallmark of Charlotte Mason methodology. We naturally work narration into our day, so having multiple "official" narration moments for multiple subjects and multiple kids was too much for us (ie, Mom ran out of brain space from all the words!). Also, for a true first grade level, I felt there was too much reading/writing for independent work. My son was an early reader and writer, so I could tweak this to work, but for my other child(ren), first or even second grade would mean I would have to sit and read the whole lesson to them (not to mention they'd tire of the writing on some lessons). Some moms love that, and back when I was only homeschooling one and we didn't have several subjects, it worked fine. Like so much of homeschooling, it's really about what works best for your family. If you don't mind tweaking lessons, this is a fun, easy-to-use program with (big bonus) done-for-you lesson plans to get you started!
Excellent

We recently switched to *My Story 1* from a different curriculum, and I couldn’t be happier with our choice! Master Books has exceeded my expectations, and I can’t recommend them enough. I absolutely love the "open and go" aspect of the curriculum—it makes our homeschooling day so much smoother. The workbook is filled with engaging and colorful elements that really capture my child’s attention. It’s been a wonderful addition to our learning, and we’re excited to continue with Master Books!
Amazing!

I was so hesitant to use this particular course because I detest curriculum that focus on "me me me". Our local government curriculum is very self-centred and in our homeschool we want to rather direct our children's hearts towards God and His creation and His people. My 1st and 2nd graders both LOVE this book, each opportunity is used to direct their hearts and minds to God. It is working so well for them!
We liked it

I like introducing my child to the information in this book but at times she was bored with it or it seemed to much for her. I don't know how much she truly got out of it, but it was good for exposure.
Easy to use!

My kiddos loved this series as first time homeschoolers! So simple to use and dig into learning about where we live!
Another great option.

My 1st grader really enjoyed this history book. She loved learning all about the state that she lives in, transportation and her family tree.
My child begged to do this!

My child thoroughly enjoyed My Story. She retained more than I expected and got a lot out of it! It was very fun and the pictures were bright and fun to look at! If I tried to skip it for a day if we were short on time she would beg me to still do it!
Sweet

This book offers a God-centered introduction to social studies and it starts right in the home. My son loves the fun activities and lots of opportunities for us to color together.
Wonderful introduction to social studies

My daughter and I really enjoyed this course. It was fun to learn about different cultures and countries, but also to practically see how God fits into everything.
