What This Course Covers
One Nation Under God moves chronologically through the defining eras of American history: colonization, revolution, nation-building, westward expansion, the Civil War, the World Wars, and America's rise to global leadership. Students examine the spiritual, philosophical, and cultural forces behind each era, exploring how faith, ideology, geography, and remarkable individuals shaped the nation's path.

Each unit starts with a timeline, which helps set the stage before jumping in. The text is broken into lessons instead of long chapters, and the reading is spread over a few days. That makes it much easier to fit into your routine without it feeling like too much at once.
The layout is clean and organized, with clear color pictures that actually add to the content instead of just filling space. Each lesson begins with a Prepare to Study section, which gives a simple starting point and helps focus the reading.
What stands out most is the tone. It’s written directly to the student, and it makes history feel more personal and engaging. It doesn’t read like a dry textbook. And the most important thing is that it is written with a biblical worldview.
Overall, it’s thoughtful, manageable, and engaging. It feels like a book a student can actually connect with, not just get through.
The course is educational, edifying and engaging. It provokes a critical thinking, a deep thought and even provides an opportunity for a change. It is a very honest course. The course is beautifully written. It provides great base for students to learn about the roots of their country and foundation of their faith.
The book is full of great color, maps pictures. Each lesson goes over what is going to be studied, a bible verse to support with a biblical worldview woven throughout while still giving the truth of what happened in history. History can be tragic and messy and Angela has always put things into perspective in such wonderful way.
The course organized for your student to be open and go, take about 45minutes to complete each day and go over not only the subject matter, but have questions for critical thinking and analysis as well as ties in to our faith. Each day of the week is usually set up the same to help your child absorb information and be able to tackle assignments. There is assigned reading, glossary terms, questions, writing assignments, and map work. There are quester reviews to make sure your student is retaining information. Our family would highly recommend this course!
First, the structure is very similar to other Master Book’s courses. The consistency in structure is such a comfort! The assigned reading and worksheets/exams seem to coordinate well with one another. The daily assignments are broken into digestible sections and are not overwhelming. The additional resources in the back of the book are especially helpful. You’ll find things like the complete Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address, The Star-Spangled Banner, various character sketches, and the Mayflower Compact. I found this section particularly interesting and helpful. Somehow, having all these resources that have profoundly affected our nation’s history feels special. The glossary in the back of the textbook is also a helpful addition.
Next, in the latter sections of the book the author covers recent history. I truly appreciate that the author does not shy away from the controversial topics that are a present challenge for these students who will soon be launching into the world as adults. She addresses these topics from a biblical worldview and does not sugar coat the consequences of some of the unbiblical choices made by leaders, lawmakers, and various citizens of our nation. These topics are presented in a way that encourages critical thinking and development of the student’s worldview. I think this also provides an important opportunity for families to discuss these topics in more depth and to look toward scripture for guidance.
Finally, the course is a comprehensive look at American history from a biblical worldview. The author presents the events in the story of our nation, good and bad, in an engaging way, rather than a series of names and dates. I am looking forward to using this with my upcoming high school student.
The first few chapters (also shown in the preview) were a bit more difficult to get into but as the book went on the pacing picked up considerably. There are a lot of big ideas presented concisely but compellingly for a broad, big-picture overview of the entire history of the United States of America.
I do like how she highlights certain people philosophies and events in special feature sections throughout the book for a deeper dive. Some of the features are serious and thought-provoking while others are more lighthearted and intriguing. I also like that the author does not shy away from deeper and difficult conversations or focus on trivialities. Each chapter feels important and has given me a greater appreciation for the sacrifices and difficult decisions many have made and continue to make along the way to preserve our freedom.
I appreciate the special features like important documents in the back matter of the book and the glossary for the bolded terms found throughout the chapters. I do wish there was and index for the book though as I feel that is especially important for high school level books for study purposes and using as a reference tool. The digital version of the student text is searchable though which is helpful.
Overall the way I'm very pleased with this course and I'm excited to use it for my children when they get to the high school age for now I am enjoying reading it for myself as I grow my own understanding of our country's history.
I enjoyed all the history that gave a good background and solid foundation before diving into the explorers and early settlers in North America. I was impressed to see the culture and how each colony was settled and then all the events that lead to the War for Independence as well as the long road that lead to the Civil War. World events did get their proper recognition in how they had a ripple effect on the U.S. or visa versa, such as the Louisiana Purchase and the World Wars. There were cultural highlights as well as highlights on some people of the time, often not the usual historical figures one would expect, but those who left an impact on history. Each of the presidents are mentioned throughout the course and the many events that happened under their administration.
(I did not like how there was very little said about transportation outside of war. It is mentioned about trains, automobiles, planes, and space, but maybe that is a personal preference coming from a background where every day involves these.)
A word of warning for those who are sensitive to certain topics, war does equal death, and the death count of the Civil War effected my son. As we get into modern times, there is terrorism and Roe vs. Wade (from a perspective of life is valuable). Being a high school level course these are topics students will be encountering in adult life and is an excellent time to discuss.
As a high school course it is incomplete without the Teacher Guide with all the worksheets. For an adult wanting to dig into American History in chronological order, it is very good.
I do not worry about giving this history book to my kids. They will study and see who has stood up for God over the years and who didn't (and calls sin what it is, sin). The discussions on why and how events happen are very good.
Overall this has been a good history course that is also good for critical thinking.
