Customer Reviews
Practice Makes Polished 2 offers four main spelling activities that repeat throughout the section. I understand that repetition can be beneficial for younger students, but when my daughter dislikes two of the spelling activities, I would have loved to see more variety in this area.
The grammar and reading section provides the extra practice needed without being overwhelming. We have had fun utilizing the Word Play stories while reviewing grammar concepts.
We haven’t used the writing section a whole lot yet as my daughter still needs to grow her writing stamina, but she has enjoyed the Journal days and as a homeschool mom, I’m very excited to see the journal prompts!
Overall, Practice Makes Polished 2 is a great resource for practicing language arts concepts. Its simple format is full of color and age-appropriate illustrations without being cluttered or overwhelming. I recommend this book and look forward to future levels.
The spelling sheets haven’t been much use to us because we haven’t been following the spelling words and doing our own spelling because they have a hard time with it. That said, I do like the sheet that lists the spelling words (I cross them out and write in our own) and they have to write 3 sentences using the spelling words and different punctuation marks. I think that is great practice!
The journal sheets have been good. It gets them used to how to write dates and days of the week, and also makes them write some more. Sometimes we use the prompt written on the sheet, sometimes I make up my own.
Over all, it’s been ok. It’s been nice to have for parts of it, but I think we would have been ok not to use it. Overall it’s minimal and would be nice if there was more to it.
I ordered the EBook. Printing pages is a pain, to put it lightly. I have to scroll between three points in the PDF to get a lessons worth of pages.
We need GRAMMAR work. Where are the extra activities for making plurals? Where are the fun work pages for abbreviations or initials? All we get are convoluted stories using Vocab (often they make NO sense), Mad Lib style practice for nouns (& the stories are looking for specific words...so that's unhelpful). They offer spelling word practice in another place, but it is also minimalist so I may as well have her copy words.
The overwhelming critique of the language arts curriculum is we learn an idea and usually move on. We rarely circle back. I work REALLY hard to constantly review and use the BORING pages in the back of the book to help my daughter learn. The grammar sheets are overwhelming for a 2nd grader. You guys could put a little work in there to make all this engaging. I love the scope and sequence of MasterBooks, but this has been a struggle. As my kid struggles with reading I have asked teachers and specialist for help. Their feedback is "Well they don't offer practice..."
I am sorry to say, the practice book is borderline silly. I can't believe all the positive reviews unless they're only posting positive feedback.
