Practice Pages for Spelling, Grammar, Reading, and Writing

Practice Makes Polished Level 4 is a supplemental practice workbook (with answer keys), not a complete language arts curriculum. This flexible resource fills several needs:

  • Use it alongside Language Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 or any other language arts program to ensure mastery and retention.
  • Use it solo as remediation, enrichment, or summer learning.

The introductory material outlines two 36-week scheduling suggestions plus alternate 8- and 12-week summer schedules.

A Fun Owl Theme Kids Will Love

Short reading passages (with comprehension questions) center on owls — 16 unique owl species such as barn owls, screech owls, and red owls; and owl habitats, behaviors, and characteristics. To further the owl theme, use the extension activities at the back of the book which include drawing tutorials as well as papercrafts.

Novelty Ensures Excitement and Erases Boredom

A broad variety of written activities means kids are never bored with this workbook:

  • Spell with Color: Students use colored pencils to differentiate between consonants and vowels in spelling words.
  • Word Shape Spelling: Words are written into boxes that match their letter shapes.
  • Put Words in Order: Activities that require students to arrange words alphabetically.
  • Word Play: Students fill in stories with different parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.
  • Mark It! Word Usage Reviews: These focus on homophones, homonyms, and homographs as well as correct word usage.
  • Write It Well: Thes activities encourage students to write different types of sentences, including imperative, declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative.
  • Journal It!: Provides opportunities for creative writing and reflection on daily life, personal thoughts, weather descriptions and passages from the Book of Psalms or Proverbs.
  • Mazes: For practicing parts of speech like pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions.
  • Word Search: Students find and circle specific words within a grid or create their own word search puzzles.
  • Hidden Picture: Students color sections based on different word types or parts of speech.
  • Match-up: Students draw lines to connect words with their meanings or correct usage.
  • Fill In It: Activities where students complete sentences with appropriate words, such as who's or whose.
  • Drawing Activities: Included within reading comprehension sections, asking students to draw scenes, animals, or characters from the stories.
  • Owl Crafts: Optional activities such as drawing owls, making an owl journal, and creating paper owls.

A Gentle Way to Build Writing Skills
Review by Kathleen C
As a homeschool mom, I've really appreciated Practice Makes Polished Level 4 from MasterBooks. It's a gentle but effective way to reinforce grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing skills without feeling overwhelming. The lessons are short enough to fit easily into our day while still providing meaningful practice.
I especially like that it encourages students to think about why an answer is correct instead of just completing endless worksheets. The variety of exercises helps keep things interesting, and I've seen my child's confidence grow as the year has progressed. It also pairs well with other language arts programs, making it an easy addition to our homeschool routine.
If you're looking for a solid language arts workbook that provides consistent review and helps strengthen writing mechanics, Practice Makes Polished Level 4 is a wonderful choice.
Great extra practice when needed!
Review by Rachel
I have reviewed and previewed this book from front to back and I am excited to use this during the coming school year. It is full of great practice pages to extend the learning from Language Lessons for a Living Education level 4. These practice pages are going to allow my children the opportunity to practice and really focus in on the concepts we are covering in LL4. I love that Masterbooks has provided the extra book to go side by side with the Language course. The fun additional theme of owls is so much fun. My kids are excited to use it!
Must Have Companion for LLFALE 4
Review by Charity
Language Lessons Level 4 was a huge challenge for my oldest. I wish she would have had this practice supplement because i think it would have given her the extra practice of the concepts from Level 4 as she didn't retain very much from the lesson book alone, partially due to some hidden learning differences.

The spelling activites are vital for us as my students do better with spelling taught daily. I like how the writing practice also incorporates the grammar concepts that they are learning throughout the course. The word play pages are a great way to practice the parts of speech, although some aspects of these pages could use more refining such as differentiating from  when the story needs a possessive or a personal pronoun, plural pronoun etc.. Some of the other labels were also not as specific as would be helpful ( we often use this as a 2 player activity with the other with one player not knowing context which is great for getting uncles and grandparents involved, but would be better with the correct labels.

Although this first edition may have some rough edges here and there, this supplement is a gamechanger for the Language Lessons Series. For the lower levels, we have also greatly benefitted from the Academy Video Supplements for the language lessons series so be sure to check those out as well!
Good Practice Book
Review by Michelle C.
Practice Makes Polished 4 is a good resource for reviewing all the concepts taught in LLFLE 4. The owl theme is fun and engaging for students, and I am pleased to see a wider variety of grammar activities than in previous levels. The journaling prompts are appreciated and I hope to continue seeing these in future levels. I also absolutely love and appreciate the Charts and Helps in the back of the book, which continue to be a strong support feature.

I was a little disappointed at the lack of variety in some areas. For an upper-level elementary practice book, I would have loved to see less repetition in the spelling activities, especially since the Word Shapes pages are available on the product page. In the writing practice section, the Write It Well pages can also feel a little redundant.

Overall, this is still a solid practice book that can benefit students. I would recommend this book to any upper-level elementary student who can use some review in language arts skills but doesn’t mind some repetitive activities.
Fun, interesting, structured practice
Review by JoyfulMommy
These are great worksheets and activities to extend and review the lessons in Language Lessons! There is a nice variety of extra spelling activities to incorporate throughout the week to practice the spelling words more than if only introduced on the last day of the lesson. Word Play stories in the grammar and writing practice are a family favorite here, and the owl articles are interesting and informative while giving a bit of reading and comprehension practice. If your child is doing fine with Language Lessons as is, and reading and writing additionally on their own, you don’t really need this (one thing I love about the Language Lessons books is that they are all-in-one!) But if you want some more light - and lighthearted - structured practice, this is a great resource!
Nice addition
Review by Yulia
Practice Makes Polished 4 is a great addition to the Language Lessons for a Living Education 4. It adds some extra spelling, grammar, writing and reading practice. It is easy to use. We normally print out pages for the areas where my daughter needs most practice. We also like the reading parts in the workbook as well: they are engaging. This level's reading focus is on different kinds of owls. My child loves birds and is excited to read about them.
My daughter personally does not enjoy Journaling part of the workbook, but it is a personal preference. I am grateful that this section is included which gives me flexibility to use it as needed. Overall, this is a wonderful workbook and a great help.
Perfect companion if you are looking to build upon level 4
Review by Sara G
Practice makes polished 4 is a wonderful addition to LLFLE 4. LLFLE 4 is a complete course on its own but this companion gives more practice sheets if your kiddo needs some help in certain areas. There are writing practice pages for each lesson, grammar and reading sheets and my favorite, spelling practice. I used to make my own worksheets for spelling but now I can choose from this book to keep spelling practice fun. This is definitely not a book you need to feel obligated to complete, but this is an excellent tool to add to your homeschool arsenal! This could also be a great option to use during summer to keep minds fresh!
Perfect Practice Book!
Review by Jen
I am loving the Practice Makes Polished series! I love that alongside practicing spelling, grammar, reading and writing, the student is learning about Owls in this one! These books are so much fun and my son can’t wait to dive into them every day. We love doing the word play exercises together and making silly stories. I have seen so much improvement with his writing abilities as well through these books.
Flexible Review and Reinforcement
Review by Dawn P
Practice Makes Perfect 4 is a great tool for extra practice in language arts. I love that it is divided up into categories so I can easily find the pages for the things my children need extra practice working through. For example, if you have a child that is doing great in spelling but struggling with grammar, you can just skip over the spelling section entirely. This book provides extra practice and is not a standalone curriculum. The pages are fun and engaging and can reinforce new skills or go back and practice skills that need a little polishing. It could also be used over the summer to keep things fresh in just a few minutes a day. You can schedule it however you would like to, skipping what you don’t need but they also provide a couple of different optional schedules.
It's a Hoot!
Review by Barbara D
This book is a total hoot (so my daughter says). Owl share how I like it... but enough with the puns. The students learn all about owls in the grammar and reading practice part of this level of practice. I do love the Biblical references to birds while talking about owls. There are a few extra owl activities in the back.
Much like the previous levels, there are extra pages to work on spelling and activities for writing, including the journal pages. The journal pages this time are smaller lines as compared to previous levels, which is appropriate for the students continued hand development.
There is also helps for the parent in the front of the book as well as a suggested schedule.
This is a great resource to go along Language Lessons 4 or to use in a traditional summer break.
