A Homeschooler's Guide to Mastering Penmanship with Catch on to Cursive Curriculum

Where keyboards and touchscreens dominate our communication, homeschool families might consider learning to write in cursive an optional educational endeavor. However, there's still a great need for students to learn the art of cursive writing. Beyond its aesthetic appeal and a student's ability to read historical documents, cursive writing actually offers several cognitive benefits. Research suggests that it can enhance fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, reading comprehension and more. That's why we're thrilled to introduce Master Books' Catch on to Cursive homeschool curriculum—a structured and enjoyable approach to mastering cursive script for students in grades 3 through 6, with a separate schedule available for older students. In this post, we will share why this unique curriculum works so well for homeschool families.

Cursive handwriting is vital to a great education
Yes! Cursive Handwriting Is Vital to a Great Education

While school systems are removing cursive handwriting from a child’s educational experience, studies show this is unwise and counterproductive to a child’s brain development. In this guest post, Carrie Bailey, Master Books homeschool curriculum author of Catch on to Cursive, shares scientific proof that cursive penmanship provides optimal conditions for learning and is truly a vital part of a great education for your students.

Worthwhile Practice
Review by Laurie
This gentle approach to cursive writing is based on scripture from the book of Luke. The course includes an easy-to-follow schedule to help keep you organized and on schedule, allowing you to complete it in a 3-day-a-week format over 36 weeks. My daughter had already completed the Catching on to Cursive course. Which she mentioned she preferred to this course. With that said, I still find this to be a worthwhile and valuable practice to continue, including cursive writing and writing scripture on the heart.
Simple, yet beautiful.

It’s great practice of penmanship, while also engraving scripture on little hearts! I love how it instills reverence and care for the Scriptures. Even my 6th grader enjoys writing about what Jesus spoke!
great resource for cursive!!

This is such a good supplement or next year resource for cursive! I have had 2 kiddos go through the catch on cursive curriculum and I am thankful my 3rd child is going to get to reap the benefits of this resource. My 3rd grader is currently doing cursive so I plan to use this as a resource next year to solidify what she learned and help her to improve. I of course love that this resource uses scripture as its practice; it uses parables from the gospel of Luke. It doesn’t just have your child write out the verses, but also complete activities that reinforce what they are writing down. It has a daily schedule which works for a full year, and is of course open and go like all masterbooks curriculum.
Great way to practice cursive
Review by SB
How meaningful for children to practice their cursive handwriting while studying the Parables in the book of Luke! This is not a beginning cursive book and it does not teach how to form each letter. If used as scheduled, students will complete three lessons a week. Each day’s work includes cursive practice as well as another activity, such as coloring, a maze, answering questions, etc. The pages are colorful and include tracing the verse as well as space to write the verse.
