What is boldness? How does someone show initiative? What does it mean to be wise, tolerant, or sensitive? When it comes to understanding and developing character traits, biographical stories are a powerful tool.

Powerful not only because they so effectively illustrate virtues but also because your young reader doesn't feel preached at.  The 10 stories in Profiles of Integrity Vol. 2 are engrossing!

  • Instead of being told, "You should be truthful," they will read about Sacagawea who accurately translated and reported facts during the Corps of Discovery expedition, even leading them through the Rocky Mountains on their return journey.
  • Instead of hearing that gentleness is an attractive virtue, they get consumed with the story of President Abraham Lincoln who showed compassion to a young, dying Confederate soldier, comforting him and praying with him despite their opposing sides.
  • Instead of being admonished to be more orderly, they see how Colonel Charles Marshall's meticulous record-keeping ensured that the surrender terms at Appomattox Court House were accurately drafted, playing a vital role in officially ending the Civil War.

Packed with adventure, danger, and real historical drama, these books keep your students turning pages as they devour tales of daring raids, clever ingenuity, sacrificial love, and harrowing battles.

Ten Key Virtues

In ten biographical sketches, see how a figure from American or British history demonstrates a key virtue.

  1. Boldness ~ Captain John S. Mosby
  2. Gentleness ~ President Abraham Lincoln
  3. Initiative ~ Colonel John Hunt Morgan
  4. Orderliness ~ Colonel Charles Marshall
  5. Respectfulness ~ Francis Scott Key
  6. Sensitivity ~ General Robert E. Lee
  7. Tolerance ~ William Booth
  8. Truthfulness ~ Sacagawea
  9. Virtue ~ Queen Victoria
  10. Wisdom ~ Matthew Fontaine Maury

Relatable Emotions & Challenges
Each sketch puts readers in the shoes of people or those facing tough situations — death, hostility, natural threats, and breakthroughs. Kids see themselves in these moments, not just as passive learners but as participants in the story.

Unexpected Heroes
Not all the heroes are famous or powerful. Some are teens, outsiders, or people who overcame huge obstacles. This makes the stories feel accessible and inspiring to kids who might not see themselves as perfect role models.

Interactive Questions
Each chapter ends with questions that invite readers to imagine themselves in the story, reflect on choices, and think about what they’d do. This reflection turns reading into a personal adventure, not just a history lesson.

Book Format

While the stories are ordered chronologically, each chapter can stand alone if desired. Each biographical sketch will take approximately 30 minutes to read aloud.

Each chapter is introduced with a definition of the virtue demonstrated and a relevant Bible memory verse. At the close of each story, comprehension questions help check for understanding while application questions foster discussion to bring the virtues into modern life.

Read this volume and the entire four-book series to fall in love with history, find heroes to emulate, and develop godly character.

History That Teaches Integrity and Courage
Review by Kathleen C
Volume 2 took us deeper into fascinating moments across westward expansion, the Civil War era, and more. The character traits explored, like boldness, gentleness, and wisdom were clearly illustrated through gripping true stories, making history so much more relatable for my kids. We used it both as a history supplement and a character study in our homeschool, and my kids stayed engaged the whole way through.
Good Supplement Reader
Review by LaceeC
Much like volume 1, I believe this is for an older crowd, more upper elementary level. I appreciate the consistency within the series - each book begins the chapter with a character trait and a Bible verse, and each chapter ends with a Bible verse or quote and questions for discussion. The chapters are a story, the story of a life lived. There is not sections breaking up what happened at different times, but it doesn’t bounce around like some chapters in What a Character do. There are three characters that appear in the What a Character series: Francis Scott Key, Abraham Lincoln, and Mosby. I really enjoyed the chapters on Sacagawea and Queen Victoria.
Deeper study
Review by Yulia
Profiles of Integrity Vol. 2 goes deeper into the study of important heroes by talking about special character traits that were revealed through their lives. The stories are great addition to the history lessons to learn more about them in the 1804–1865 period.

Each chapter starts with a definition and a corresponding verse and ends with questions about that chapter. The chapters are small and very manageable. The series work best for Middle to High school students. It will also work well for family read alouds and discussions. It's a great way to help children appreciate the sacrifice, character traits and honorable lives these heroes showed in their lives.
A great Continuation!
Review by Sara G
Our family has been enjoying this set, reading about a new hero each night and going through the virtue in which they demonstrated. I am going through America’s Story with my 1st and 3rd grader, and my 7th and 10th grader join us to hear the nights reading. We are enjoying learning about people we may not have heard of otherwise, and challenging each others comprehension with the review questions at the end. My kids have a really good picture of history with all the different history supplements Masterbooks provides!
Powerful Examples of Integrity
Review by Charity
Profiles of Integrity Volume 2 contains many sobering stories of courageous acts of selflessness. I was challenged as I saw the different facets of a life of integrity displayed in the lives of these men and women through the engaging accounts included in this volume. I was especially touched by the conversation between Robert E. Lee and the wounded soldier. These stories are sure to inspire conversations with parents and students about the importance of allowing God to form godly traits in their lives so that they can serve him well, even in less than ideal circumstances.

This series is aimed at older students and some of the volumes may be too intense for younger students. This particular volume seems a bit less intense overall with the exception of one or two stories that include accounts of men wounded in battle.
Excellent for the Whole Family
Review by Ginger
Our entire family, from dad on down to our 3rd grader have enjoyed the profiles in this book. Our daughter enjoys that there are women profiled, and the boys have sat on the edge of their seats listening as they are read to. The biblical character qualities are easily referenced as we go about our week. This is another excellent choice for your family.
Great Addition to History
Review by Lexie
My family has really enjoyed this Profiles of Valor Audiobook series. My family downloaded the audiobook version and was able to listen to it in the car. We found the voice of the reader made this audiobook an easy listen. This second volume got my daughter's excited to hear about women who made a difference with their character. Each chapter is introduced with a character quality which is defined, memory verse given, story about a person that gives a surprising amount of detail, and then questions (as well as the answers) at the end of each section. This book series helped to make these people we've read about in books feel more like someone my family can empathize and relate hearing their accounts beyond a history lesson.
Expansion on lives of familiar characters
Review by BuildingontheRock
Volume 2 of the Profiles of Integrity series would be an interesting accompanying reader to a student studying American history from post Revolutionary War through the Civil War. Covering more well known characters such as Sacagawea, Francis Scott Key, Queen Victoria, Abraham Lincoln, and Robert E. Lee, lesser known stories about their lives are profiled as examples of truthfulness, respectfulness, virtue, wisdom, initiative, gentleness, boldness, sensitivity, and tolerance. Appropriate for middle to high school students.
Engaging stories
Review by Samantha
This book continues with engaging true stories that emphasize courage, faith, and strong character. It encourages readers to stand firm in their convictions and shows how integrity shapes lives and influences others for good.
Lovely!
Review by Marle
Profiles of Integrity, Volume 2 by Marilyn Boyer is made up of short, easy-to-read stories that are really enjoyable without feeling heavy or overwhelming. I loved how each chapter starts with a simple memory verse and a descriptive word that fits the person so well. The stories spark good conversations about character and faith with kids, and it’s a lovely book to have on your homeschool shelf or in your family library.
