What is thoroughness? How does someone show self-control? What does it mean to be meek, loyal, or compassionate? When it comes to understanding and developing character traits, biographical stories are a powerful tool.

Powerful not only because they so effectively illustrate virtues but also because your young reader doesn't feel preached at.

These 10 stories are engrossing!

  • Instead of being told, "You should be thorough," they will read about Booker T. Washington who cleaned a recitation room so meticulously that it secured his entry into Hampton Institute.
  • Instead of hearing that courage is an attractive virtue, they get consumed with the story of Colonel Aleksandr Groten who defied a direct order and exposed himself to enemy fire to save his men from certain death in a swamp.
  • Instead of being admonished to be more compassionate, they see how during the Russian Revolution Gregory Burmistr gave his last pair of felt boots to a young girl suffering from the cold, despite being poor himself.

Packed with adventure, danger, and real historical drama, these books keep your students turning pages as they devour tales of daring escapes, life-threatening risks, wartime heroism, and sacrificial acts of kindness.

In ten biographical sketches, see how a figure from the late 1800s through World War I demonstrates a key virtue.

  1. Thoroughness ~ Booker T. Washington
  2. Contentment ~ Horatio Spafford
  3. Hospitality ~ Kate Gibson
  4. Self-Control ~ Kate Shelley
  5. Meekness ~ George Washington Carver
  6. Joyfulness ~ Lieutenant Armand Pinsard
  7. Courage ~ Colonel Aleksandr Groten
  8. Loyalty ~ Darya Efimova
  9. Obedience ~ Sergeant Alvin C. York
  10. Compassion ~ Gregory Burmistr

Relatable Emotions & Challenges: Each sketch puts readers in the shoes of people facing tough situations — death, imprisonment, poverty, discrimination, and triumph. Kids see themselves in these moments, not just as passive learners but as participants in the story.

Unexpected Heroes: Not all the heroes are famous or powerful. Some are teens, outsiders, or people who overcame huge obstacles. This makes the stories feel accessible and inspiring to kids who might not see themselves as perfect role models.

Interactive Questions: Each chapter ends with questions that invite readers to imagine themselves in the story, reflect on choices, and think about what they'd do. This reflection turns reading into a personal adventure, not just a history lesson.

Book Format

While the stories are ordered chronologically, each chapter can stand alone if desired. Each biographical sketch will take approximately 30 minutes to read aloud.

Each chapter is introduced with a definition of the virtue demonstrated and a relevant Bible memory verse. At the close of each story, comprehension questions help check for understanding while application questions foster discussion to bring the virtues into modern life.

Read this volume and the entire four-book series to fall in love with history, find heroes to emulate, and develop godly character.

Real heroes who lived out their faith
Review by Kathleen C
This volume is full of inspiring and sometimes intense narratives from the late 1800s through World War I. My older son especially appreciated the brave examples and sacrificial actions that showed traits like courage, compassion, and self-control. The stories are ideal for middle and high school readers, and the comprehension/application questions made great discussion starters for our family devotions.
Good Supplement Reader
Review by LaceeC
Focusing on character traits of the 10 individuals written about in volume 3 of the series, this book is a great resource to go along with the America’s Story series. That being said, like the prior two books, there are some duplicates between the What a Character series and this one. There are four in this book: Booker T Washington, Kate Shelley, George Washington Carver, and Sergeant York. I appreciate the consistent format between books; starting a chapter with a definition of the character trait, a Bible verse, and ending with a Bible verse or quote and questions about the chapter. I wish they were all new characters with new stories; for example Kate Shelley, while her story is told in both books, slightly differently, it’s a bit repetitive between the two series to have her in both with the same story. These Profiles of Integrity would appeal to an older crowd though so maybe it’s not a problem for many.
New heroes to meet!
Review by Sara G
Our family has been reading this set, one chapter a night. We get to meet new heres each night, with a scripture reference and virtue that is relevant to the person. My 4 kiddos, all of varying ages love to hear about each person and answer the review questions at the end. We especially like that we only knew 2 people from this particular volume, so we were on pins and needles listening to the new stories we hadn’t heard before! A great supplement for any history book, for any age.
Sobering Reminders if the True Meaning of Courage
Review by Charity
Profiles of Integrity Volume 3 contains many sobering stories of courageous acts of selflessness. Although a few like George Washington Carver's story are a little more light-hearted, many of the stories are pretty intense. I would recommend most of the accounts for the upper grades and would preread before considering using them in a family setting with younger children present. That being said, these stories of bravery are a sobering reminder of the importance of being faithful and helping our children build good character as a young person now so that they are ready to rise to even the most difficult occasion should it ever be required of them. I am so thankful that Master Books has put out so many resources to help us in our discipleship journey as we seek to raise courageous warriors for the kingdom of God.
Excellent Beginning Biographies
Review by Ginger
Marilyn Boyer has outdone herself in this volume. The profiles in Vol. 3 are excellent beginning points for deeper study. The style of writing and length of each biography makes this a perfect book for the entire family. This will go in our summer adventure bag to read while we are on trips! Excellent read!
Great
Review by LD
These books are going to add so much to your children’s understanding of people in history and how God used them. The stories are short and packed with information. I really enjoyed that they had application questions to ask to your kids as well as a character trait that they focused on. Not only you learning history, but you’re also learning biblical application as it pertains to building character that we wish our children would have. These books could be used as a family read aloud, or a devotional time once a week or a morning basket. If you need a reader for your child this would also work well, but I think the questions and application section would work much better if done with your child.
Versatile Reader
Review by BuildingontheRock
Both male and female teens will appreciate and learn from the godly character examples of men and women throughout history who displayed thoroughness, contentment, hospitality, self-control, meekness, joyfulness, courage, loyalty, obedience, and compassion. No prior knowledge of these biographies is necessary to fully appreciate the godly character that is displayed in volume 3 of the Profiles of Integrity series.
