What is honor? How does someone show resourcefulness? What does it mean to be patient, forgiving, or brave? When it comes to understanding and developing character traits, biographical stories are a powerful tool.

Powerful not only because they so effectively illustrate virtues but also because your young reader doesn't feel preached at.

These 10 stories are engrossing!

  • Instead of being told, "You should be dependable," they will read about medic Cecil Breeden who unflinchingly administered medical care to wounded soldiers on Omaha Beach amidst heavy German fire on D-Day.
  • Instead of hearing that forgiveness is an attractive virtue, they get consumed with the story of Jacob DeShazer who, after enduring harsh imprisonment and torture by the Japanese, found the capacity to forgive his captors and returned to Japan as a missionary.
  • Instead of being admonished to be more discerning, they see how Commander Eugene Fluckey meticulously planned a daring mission to blow up a Japanese supply train, carefully selecting his crew to ensure the mission's success and his men's safety.

Packed with adventure, danger, and real historical drama, these books keep your students turning pages as they devour tales of daring rescues, sabotage missions, death-defying pursuits, and ultimate sacrifice.

In ten biographical sketches, see how a figure from World War II and its aftermath demonstrates a key virtue.

  1. Honor ~ General Pyotr Wrangel
  2. Punctuality ~ Gunnar Kaasen
  3. Forgiveness ~ Jacob DeShazer
  4. Patience ~ Colonel Philip Toosey
  5. Resourcefulness ~ Lieutenant William Overstreet
  6. Dependability ~ Cecil Breeden
  7. Love ~ Captain Eddie Simpson
  8. Discernment ~ Commander Eugene Fluckey
  9. Deference ~ Lieutenant Adrian Marks
  10. Bravery ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Relatable Emotions & Challenges: Each sketch puts readers in the shoes of people facing tough situations — death, hostility, imprisonment, and triumph. Kids see themselves in these moments, not just as passive learners but as participants in the story.

Unexpected Heroes: Along with obvious heroes like generals and leaders, the stories also include humbler roles like a musher, a medic, a pastor, and ordinary soldiers. This diversity shows that integrity can be demonstrated in any role or profession, especially in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

Interactive Questions: Each chapter ends with questions that invite readers to imagine themselves in the story, reflect on choices, and think about what they'd do. This reflection turns reading into a personal adventure, not just a history lesson.

Book Format

While the stories are ordered chronologically, each chapter can stand alone if desired. Each biographical sketch will take approximately 30 minutes to read aloud.

Each chapter is introduced with a definition of the virtue demonstrated and a relevant Bible memory verse. At the close of each story, comprehension questions help check for understanding while application questions foster discussion to bring the virtues into modern life.

Read this volume and the entire four-book series to fall in love with history, find heroes to emulate, and develop godly character.

Powerful Lessons of Integrity in Challenging Times
Review by Kathleen C
Volume 4 captures powerful, exciting true stories from the World War II era and its aftermath. The focus on virtues like forgiveness, patience, and bravery through real historical figures helped my children see how integrity plays out under the most difficult circumstances. This one quickly became a favorite around here, and the mix of international characters broadened our understanding of faith lived out beyond our own culture.
Good Supplement Reader
Review by LaceeC
The final book in the series focuses on the character traits of 10 new individuals not seen in any other series from Master Books, most of which are from WWII. Each chapter begins with a definition of the character trait discussed and a Bible verse, and ends with a Bible verse or quote and questions for the chapter. I appreciate the predictable layout between volumes and I enjoyed reading about different characters, especially Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I’d recommend for upper elementary. Though the stories are short and younger kids can absolutely understand the material, I think the layout with very few pictures would not be as fun for younger kids like the What a Character series.
Perfect companion for the book/curriculum!
Review by Sara G
This is the final volume in the set and we were so excited to read this one! This one is certainly my kiddos favorite! We love history and especially love the layout of this series! The virtue demonstrated, the scripture reference and comprehension questions make sure that my kiddos truly understand the lengths these heroes went to for their county and humanity. This set has been such a blessing and I am excited to tell other families about the various ways that it can be used to supplement any history curriculum! I especially like the idea of making it a part of a morning basket!
Riveting Read
Review by Ginger
Our oldest, a history lover, fell in love with this volume. Again, the writing is excellent, engaging and captivating. All of our kids, 8-13 love this series, but Volume 4 has been our 13 year old's favorite -- mostly due to the subject matter. The Godly character traits are helpful as we have real life conversations. Marilyn has hit this series out of the park!
Good resource
Review by LD
Make the time period from the 1920’s to the end of WWII come alive for your kids!
These books are going to add so much to your children’s understanding of people in history and how God used them. The stories are short and packed with information. I really enjoyed that they had application questions to ask to your kids as well as a character trait that they focused on. Not only you learning history, but you’re also learning biblical application as it pertains to building character that we wish our children would have. These books could be used as a family read aloud, or a devotional time once a week or a morning basket. If you need a reader for your child this would also work well, but I think the questions and application section would work much better if done with your child.
Gripping accounts
Review by BuildingontheRock
Volume 4 of the Profiles of Integrity series contains gripping accounts of people who demonstrated notable character qualities worth emulating. Punctuality is exemplified by Balto’s musher rushing medication critically needed by its recipients. Jake DeShazer exemplifies forgiveness as he returns to share the gospel in Japan - where he had formerly been a POW in World War II - resulting in the salvation of an unexpected convert. Eight other character qualities are covered in this reader that is set in Russia, Alaska, Japan, Thailand, and France. A notable quote from the book: “He showed me what a human being should be and he changed the philosophy of my life.” The reader would fit well as supplemental material for a World History curriculum, or anyone just looking for interesting reading material with an emphasis on character qualities worth incorporating into one’s own life. High school level.
Powerful stories
