Very Worthwhile Read
Review byBecky V
Living in this current day and age affords us the benefits of being able to access the writings and works of many who have gone before us. Charles H. Spurgeon is a well know preacher/pastor of the 19th century who is renown for his preaching and clear articulation of the Gospel message. This collection of sermons from 1855-1856 is such a wonderful example of his utilization of his God-given gift.
The positive of this book is clearly the content, page after page of bold Gospel proclamation with a soft pastoral tone. It gives us such a good sense that the Gospel we hear today is the Gospel that was preached in the past, an unchanging truth preserved by the Holy Spirt.
The primary negative of this book is the challenge with locating specific sermons as there is no table of contents or index to aid in that process. Having some sort of organization within the outline of the book (other than just the date the sermon was preached) would really help in being able to access the thoughts and words of one of the day great preachers of our past.
Overall, I highly recommend this work, a very worthwhile read.

Edifying
Review byYulia
This book is a set of Charles Spurgeon sermons. It is almost 800 pages long. It’s full of edifying sermons. I was particularly touched by the “Sin of Unbelief” sermon: very thought provoking and sobering not to doubt God and His mightiness.
I appreciate the translation into modern language. Since it’s a digital version, it would be useful to have some sort of table of context to find the sermon of interest or to look through which ones are available on demand, but it’s not a deal breaker. I’d give it 4.5 stars for user friendliness because of lack of the table of context, but otherwise very edifying and great sermons.

Great Resource!
Review byCandice
I love Spurgeon! Sometimes, though, I get a little bogged down in his amazing vocabulary and word pairings. I really appreciate this volume because it makes it easier to understand what he is saying and still get the complete context. I have no complaint. Maybe if I had a doctorate in Spurgeonology I could have some criticism, but I don't have any because I found it to be so helpful!

Spurgeon in modern language
Review byKristy
The Spurgeon Series: 1855-1856 is an excellent resource for any home. Charles Spurgeon did hundreds of amazing sermons during his lifetime. He explored God's Word in a way that captures who God truly is. The only issue for me has been trying to read through them in the language of his time. I have found myself confused at time because I simply don't understand the language (although it is English, it is not modern at all).
This series of sermons was edited by Larry and Marion Pierce for the purpose of putting Spurgeon's sermons into modern language so the every day person can easily read and understand them. I appreciate this very much. My children can now understand what is being said as well. The book is laid out very simply. The title of each sermon is at the beginning of each section along with the author (of course, Spurgeon) as well as when and where the sermon was preached. There are also footnotes that help explain some of the topics being preached on as well.
If you or your family love Spurgeon sermons but have a hard time understanding some of them, this series if perfect for you.

Loved it
Review byAshley
This book is the sermons of Charles Spurgeon from 1855 through 1856, but it has been updated so that it is easier to understand. It goes into depth about the knowledge he had. This book is 779 pages long. Each sermon has references listed at the bottom of the pages. So if you want to dig deeper into it you can if you want to. This book has a lot of sermons to read, and they are all good sermons with great reflection that could happen afterward. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Spurgeon
Review byDustie
This collection of sermons is full of wisdom and treasures, calling the believer to a deeper walk with the LORD. These are not short devotional lessons. They are full length, in-depth sermons. Spurgeon’s passion for the scriptures and Jesus Christ are evident throughout the text. This is a great book to have in a home library, and it would make a great gift to any student of the Word of God. The one criticism I have is that it does not include an index in the back where one could more easily reference different topics.

Wonderful Resource!
Review byKrista
Charles Spurgeon was one of the most influential pastors of his time, and even nowadays, that his work is still being sought out.
I love that his sermons have been put into modern language, and the translation work is very impressive! This book is a great resource to have in your home!
The only thing missing that would make this book complete is a table of contents, for ease of reading.
Well done!
