Great resource
Review by Barbara D
My oldest is autistic and I have done tons of therapy with him. However, locally help is minimal for homeschoolers. I found this resource to not only support what therapy has been teaching but I can used the included resources with my other kids as well. I had scoured the internet for these items and here they all were, just ready for me to print. The only thing I'd change is to include more picture cards that are included, but that's a preference. I've already recommended this book to multiple other moms for their kids.
Purchase for the "if"
Review by Ashley
We don't currently have any diagnosed special needs. But I bought and read this book anyways because I wanted to have strategies to go to if I were to notice anything that might need some helpful tips. Thank you for this resource. Great suggestions!
Encouraging strategies and support!
Review by Audrey525
Thrive is unlike any other book I’ve found and is helpful in so many ways. It is practical and encouraging for parents facing a very challenging task. There are many different approaches within the book. It focuses on a positive environment and really meeting the needs on a personal level. It also talks about life skills and time management type skills. These techniques and ideas are certainly not a one-size-fits-all all. It is meant as a starting point to see what works for your circumstances. I appreciated the way it even cautions the frustration change can bring when implementing these things. The handouts and charts at the back of the book are very helpful and well thought out. There are charts to help with schooling and schedules and also life skills and everyday tasks. I believe this book can add value to those with special needs students, but also for neurotypical students who may struggle with motivation for school. (Pretty much every student ever). I have a daughter with autism and a son with ADHD. Being able to have new, fresh ideas to try will be a huge encouragement. I know using a behavioral approach can be damaging to some types of issues, but having the resources available to cater is still a huge win for me. It is such a positive, encouraging book and I’m looking forward to adding new techniques throughout the year.
Tools that work!
Review by Katelyn
I am so grateful for this resource because it provides many ideas and strategies for helping children with tasks and challenges. It is full of positive reinforcement and visual aids. What a robust resource that all moms and teachers can benefit from utilizing!
Applied Behavioral Analysis approach
Review by Pam
I respectfully disagree with the ABA strategies recommended in this book. My child’s experience with this type of learning and therapy was demeaning, humiliating and very manipulative. I observed many children in distress and crying, while the therapist completely ignored them in order to manipulate the child to do what they wanted. There are other ways to support an autistic child. They are not broken people, they simply perceive the world differently. Be very careful about using the Applied Behavioral Analysis techniques described in this book if you value your relationship with your child and their self esteem.
Informational and practical
Review by Michael and Colleen
There is so much out there regarding homeschooling a special needs child, it can be overwhelming. As someone who's further along in our homeschool journey I would have loved to have a lot of what I needed all in one place early on. This is a great getting started book for parents coming alongside their special needs children. It outlines specific ways to create an encouraging positive learning environment while also providing the supplies and tools needed to be successful. It is short and to the point which also lends to the value added in getting started.
Excellent Tool!
Review by Lexie
Before I homeschooled my children, I was a therapist for children on the autism spectrum. As one who spent years studying the special needs some children have, I thought this book was extremely valuable. I feel that it not only would be beneficial to a therapist, teacher, or technician working with a special needs child, but many parents could really utilize a lot of the resources contained in this book. The text does a great job in explaining different approaches to teaching. As a mom to now 6 children, I know that they all have such differences, and teaching them all the same way doesn't always work. This book provides practical examples and tools that one can use in the home as well as in any teaching setting that can help children of a wide range of abilities. The index is rich with many resources such as pictures to use in an exchange system, schedules that are ready to pull and use, as well as datasheets to track progress.
This is a fantastic resource!

This is one of those books that I think is beneficial to any parent. Regardless of whether your child is being homeschooled or in school Also, regardless of whether your child has a diagnosis or you just need a little help guiding them.
Included are Sensory Friendly Practices, Tips for nurturing daily skills in your child and methods for creating a positive learning atmosphere. There is also over 100 pages of ready to use tools (worksheets, visual aids, manipulatives, etc.) They include a table of contents so they are easy to locate. The first section of the book gives clear instructions on how to use these tools.

This book is beneficial for any family to use.

Among other topics, it provides a wealth of information about motivation strategies, schedules, task completion, teaching life skills as well as teaching strategies.
