Five Tips for Teaching American History Through a Christian Lens
Five Tips for Teaching American History Through a Christian Lens

For Christian homeschool families, teaching American history is more than memorizing facts; it's about helping children see God's hand at work, understanding the truth of our nation's story, and growing in faith and character. Master Books’ approach to U.S. history is intentionally different: it fosters wonder, honesty, and hope, guiding students to recognize both the beauty and the brokenness of America’s past while anchoring every lesson in a biblical worldview.

Sad….
Review by Sabrina
While the writing and information might be wonderful. I couldn’t get over the AI used to create the pictures. Something we are trying to avoid in our daily and school life. Had I known I wouldn’t have purchased. Going to the giveaway pile.
AI Slop
Review by Sarah
What a complete disappointment. Ignoring the whole moral controversy of AI stealing peoples hard work and not paying actual artists, they didn’t even get someone who could generate good AI pictures. I’m sorry, but whatever good the writing does is overshadowed by the absolutely horrific pictures. Some books are absolutely worse than others. There’s no unification in the art throughout an entire book, much less the series as a whole. It’s hard to find a single picture that does not have a single thing wrong with it. There are so many typical AI generated mistakes that are so easy to see, I could write a book! These books were clearly nowhere near being ready to publish when they were. Buyer beware.
Kids of ALL ages love these!
Review by Sarah
I have ages 13 down to age 5 and they all love to listen to me read these. Excellent books, I can't recommend them enough!
Great content and concept, but the pictures….
Review by Dayna
I like the concept of these books: short biographies of notable people in history. The content is engaging for my children. My only disappointment is in the illustrations. Some of them make the characters look goofy; at first my children just looked through and laughed at the pictures instead of reading the book. The illustrations should make the reader want to read the book. Also, it appears that AI was used to generate some of the images because there are mistakes like two right hands, people with extra legs and other strange things consistent with AI. I think in an attempt to publish this series quickly, the illustration quality paid the price. Maybe in the future the books could be updated with photos or hand drawn illustrations.
Fun read
Review by Mom of 8
The set is wonderful, quick, great info and fun. Our family is enjoying this set. Great with history class.
Fantastic Books!
Review by HomeschoolMom4
I purchased these books for my 12yo daughter to read alongside her History curriculum for a little something extra. These are not only well written and beautifully laid out, but also incredibly interesting. I am learning from them as well when I read a story aloud as she works on a puzzle. Highly recommend!
A Set to Return to Time and Again
Review by LLB
This set is a perfect accompaniment to several other books of the Master Books curriculum as well as a stand alone set of readers. They are a wonderful supplement to America’s Story 1-3, either to read along with or to listen to as a review of the material at the end of the course. Inventors & Scientists goes well with God’s Design: Physical World. At the back of some of the books Passport of America is listed as an additional complementary book. The kids love going through these on their own or listening to them being read aloud. "It was so inspiring!" exclaimed my son after reading the story of Belle Boyd. The biographies are interesting and engaging. My boys were spellbound by the story of the bear helping in World War 2. If we come across a person in the history curriculum that the kids are especially curious about, these bios give more details and interesting information with an emphasis on the person's character. The pictures are colorful and the chapters are broken into bite sized sections. Vocabulary words are highlighted throughout. A few of the books are recommended for 6-8th graders, but I have found that even my 2nd and 3rd graders find these books engaging. Even though they complement the American history curriculums, these books can be referenced time and again throughout a child’s school years and continue to provide interesting information with each reading.
Fun history readers
Review by Barbara D
These readers are great for the kids, but as a parent I have learned from these as well.
I love all the different characters in the books. (And yes, I say characters and not people as one book is about animal heroes, which my son likes.) My kids each have their favorite stories, some well known, and some lesser known. I love the full color, vocabulary, and how the information is laid out.
When describing a person in history, it doesn't start with when that person became famous, it sets the stage of what was going on and how they grew up. I really liked that as one could see the characteristics that made the famous person that way. There are vocabulary word in each chapter (or story) to help expand the kids learning. I also love the variety of all the stories, from teens, women, men, animals, and how they used what they had for their country. It was very well done.
I did give it 4 stars instead of 5 because I found a few stories stopped short and could have been longer. To me, it felt like it ended on a cliff hanger. (My kids give the set 5 stars.)
That being said, I still recommend this set and I am thankful I have it as an American History resource for my kids.
A fun way to learn history!
Review by Dustie
This book set made a wonderful gift for my history-loving daughter. The books are engaging and full of the beautiful legacy of Christian faith that our nation was founded on. They are broken down into sections for each individual, making them easy to digest. These books are great for independent reading, as well as just for fun. I love that they included definitions for words that may be unfamiliar or difficult for younger readers to understand. This set would make a great read-aloud or morning basket addition, as well. These stories would also be really fun to include with corresponding history lessons, and there is even a list in the back of each book that notes potential books to pair each chapter with.
Overall, I highly recommend this entire series of books for every homeschool library. They are such a fun way to learn bits of history.
Love these!
Review by Julie
We love the What a Character series! I love how we can use them right along side America’s Story and dive deeper into people we’ve read about! They’re engaging, even my 6 year old will sit and listen through the stories. They each include vocabulary words and pictures my boys enjoying looking at. There’s also a corresponding curriculum section at the back to let you know what to match each chapter up with. These are a must have for every homeschool library. I have 2 boys that are Kindergarten and 3rd grade and they love them.
