Improve cursive penmanship through patriotic passages and body strengthening exercises — for grades 3 and up.

With Write Like a Patriot, you’ll connect handwriting practice to content that actually matters, so your child is absorbing something meaningful while they develop legible, flowing cursive handwriting. Creative expression, fun facts, full-color illustrations, and a wide variety of hand, finger, and body strengthening experiences make this workbook fun for kids!

A Whole-Child Approach with a Biblical Emphasis

Write Like a Patriot takes a whole-child approach to cursive, engaging the mind, body, and heart to create a lasting learning experience. Yes, your child gets plenty of practice forming and connecting letters. But they also build fine motor strength and coordination, mature in focus and patience, and reflect on history, character, and spiritual themes through the carefully selected passages.

A Christian worldview permeates this practice workbook. Your child will copy scripture passages, read the examples of American heroes who followed God’s lead, and repeatedly see themes of prayer and Christian faith.

What Your Student Will Gain

  • Develop legible, consistent cursive handwriting with correct letter formation and spacing.
  • Build stamina and muscle memory, making cursive automatic so children can eventually focus on meaning more than handwriting.
  • Improve attention to detail through proper alignment, size, and spacing.
  • Connect handwriting practice with history by engaging with stories of American patriots.
  • Strengthen Christian faith through Bible passages and references to godly character.
  • Build the physical foundation for writing through hand, finger, and core strengthening exercises.

More Than a Handwriting Workbook

Each lesson pairs copy work with physical exercises that build the strength and coordination the body needs for confident, lasting penmanship. Your child will copy some of the most important words in our nation's history alongside fun exercises like popping bubble wrap, wringing a wet cloth, doing superman holds, using tongs, and more. These aren't filler activities. They build the gross and fine motor skills that make fluent cursive possible.

How It Works: Simple, Flexible, Open-and-Go

With Write Like a Patriot, you’ll spend just 30 minutes per day twice a week to give your child the necessary practice and skill development for beautiful cursive handwriting. Follow the clearly laid out 36-week schedule or opt for the accelerated one-semester pace, also included.

Check the supply list for any household object you may need week by week: a stapler, a washcloth, playdough, etc. An Answer Key provides solutions to the mazes and matching activities along with grading suggestions.

It’s fully open-and-go and all-in-one. Your child writes directly in the workbook where all directions for the parent are also included.

Readiness Benchmarks

Designed for grade 4, but suitable for grades 3 and up.

Write Like a Patriot assumes a mastery of print manuscript and a basic understanding of how to form cursive letters. Missing either foundation? Start with Handwriting: A to Zoo for print writing and then progress to Catch on to Cursive before starting Write Like a Patriot. (See the full Scope and Sequence for more detail and product comparisons.)

Other prerequisites are the ability to read simple sentences, pencil control, and good posture.

Great cursive practice
Review by Barbara D
This is a great book to follow Catch on to Cursive. There are many hand building exercises like in Catch on to Cursive, but no instruction for letter formation. This is a great next step after learning cursive to continue on.
The different hand building exercises include gripping activities, playdough, and tracing/drawing activities. After a hand building activity is a quote to copy in cursive. Each day is on a single double sided page, making it easy to add to any system the student is using.
The students are copying not only famous quotes from our forefathers, but also from many other through American history (see book description). Some of the quotes are long so only part is copied though more of the quote is provided. There are also some song lyrics from songs as well.
There is a suggested schedule for one year, or one semester.
I like how the students are suggested to write a prayer (in cursive) for our country.
This course works great while also studying any point of American History. My son also loves copying all the quotes.
Great fine motor skills included
Review by Andi
Write like a Patriot is aimed for 4th grade but could be used before that or after depending on skill level. 2x a week schedule makes it not overwhelming at all. Great mix if history, historical topics and historical people. Ties in well with the Heroes series. There are a lot of fun facts included and my son finds those very interesting. I really appreciate the fine motor skills exercises that are included. Builds hand strength and really helps with cursive. There are a lot of fun activities included also. And as always the verse copy work makes me happy as they are in the Word and getting reinforcement of the great importance of being in there daily.
Love it!
Review by Samantha
We have struggled with handwriting (dysgraphia) but this beautiful book has helped so much. It’s got neat activities to strengthen hands, great history facts to keep them interested, fun quotes to write and the integrated scriptures are wonderful! It helps build stamina without an overwhelming amount of just handwriting practice.
