Writing Strands Advanced 2 will help your junior high/high school student refine their writing and research skills and study John Bunyan’s classic Pilgrim’s Progress in depth.
Developed to give students advanced skills, such as recognizing and using persuasive language, writing reports, and developing character in creative pieces.
Students will learn the process of giving others their thoughts in written form through three areas: creative, research and reports, and explanatory. Every exercise will guide them in the development of communication skills they need.
Topics addressed in this one-year course include:
Recognizing the three points of view writers use
Describing what has been seen over a period of days and writing a scientific report
Understanding the organization of an explanatory exposition
Developing effective characters and conflict in creative writing
Identifying common literary devices in the Bible
Understanding why literary devices are used
A suggested schedule is provided, as well as worksheets that are three-hole punched and perforated, and the addition of a reading and literature component helps students look more deeply into the Bible and other books they select.
Recommended for: Grades 7-10 / 1 Year / 1 English credit

Fairly good overall but needs some work. Very time consuming and a significant amount of writing.

The reading section utilizes the Old English version of The Pilgrim's Progress (which requires the special download provided with the course) and does not function properly with any other version. The reading section also includes a significant amount of writing. This was a major hindrance to us. The writing portion is interesting but tedious. It requires multiple interviews, surveys, and more writing than I needed to do in college (and I was studying Liberal Arts). It is extremely time-consuming. My daughter loves reading and writing, but this course is just too demanding. We made it about halfway and we will to finish the school year with something else.

Great for relunctant writers

We have been using Writing Strands for a few years now. This year the reading portion departs from the Bible and focuses on reading the Pilgrim's Progress. It has been done in small bite-size pieces so as to not overwhelm my daughter. The lessons are clear and give a good direction on what they are supposed to be doing.

My daughter really enjoyed this and it has enhanced her writing skills. One of her favorites being when she learned a bit about sociology. Though sometimes the assignments felt a little vague, she had fun completely them!

I purchased this book with the whole 10th grade bundle, and didn't look at it closer until it was in hand. So glad it was a part of the bundle, I was concerned that I would have to look for a book for the reading part but it is a FREE download!

I absolutely love this book and love how it falls along with the pilgrims progress story as well. My son absolutely avoids having to do any type of creative writing but he has been able to work through this without resistance.
